Job Description:

Summary
Iowa State is seeking a Communications Specialist I. This position will provide project management and content creation support for university flagship magazine (Iowa Stater) and ISU Alumni Association programs as directed by Senior Director of Communications. Research materials, interview individuals, and collect information in order to create content for print or electronic media. Update and maintain university flagship magazine website. Provide general customer relations information to alumni, donors, and internal and external stakeholders.  
Example of Duties

Assist in project management for university flagship magazine including, but not limited to:

  • webpage maintenance and content management for magazine website (Drupal)

  • list management

  • photoshoot coordination

  • prepare vouchers and other documentation

  • respond to constituent feedback and requests

  • update database of past articles (FileMakerPro)

Assist in creating content for university flagship magazine including, but not limited to:

  • research materials, interview individuals, and collect information in order to compose articles for print or electronic media

  • create and organize member-only engagement content

  • monitor various publications and electronic sources of news and commentary for potential relevance

Support ISU Alumni Association communication needs including, but not limited to:

  • project management support for, but not limited to:

    • wall calendar (organize dates, collect feedback from campus units)

    • coordinate production calendar for print projects (catalogs, board handbook) and alumni center building displays

  • research materials, interview individuals, and collect information in order to compose articles, press releases, promotional pieces, reports, or catalogs in print or electronic media

  • compose and edit print and electronic communication and marketing materials for distribution to target audiences (could include photographs, written content, audio, or video)

  • review and/or edit layouts, drafts, and information in order to check for content, readability, and style

  • monitor various publications and electronic sources of news and commentary for potential relevance to unit activities

  • represent ISU Alumni Association at functions, professional organizations, industry organizations, community, and related external events

• Individual contributor position with developing professional and/or technical skills working under immediate to general supervision
• Grasps professional-level knowledge and concepts of field while working in a progressive learning mode
• Works on problems and issues of somewhat limited scope
• Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data for which answers are available or can be obtained
• Responds to inquiries and issues, escalating to manager or higher level workers as appropriate
• May lead projects of limited scope and complexity
• May provide guidance to students
