Climate Law Fellow

Early Career Climate Law Fellow

Stanford Law School invites applications for a full-time resident Climate Law Fellow to join its thriving Environmental and Natural Resource Law and Policy (ENRLP ) and Environmental Law Clinic (ELC ) programs.

The Climate Law Fellow will be housed in the Law School and work directly with the ENRLP/ELC Director on developing and implementing a variety of climate-related projects, including joint projects with multidisciplinary teams of faculty, researchers, and students in the new Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability , launched on September 1, 2002.  Our intent is to have the Climate Law Fellow serve as a bridge between the two schools, providing significant high-level climate law and policy analysis in collaboration with University researchers and external partners.

Building from several existing projects, we anticipate a range of climate, sustainability, and resilience work in such areas as renewable energy, building decarbonization, wildfire smoke and forest management, water quality and quantity, food security and agriculture, biodiversity and conservation, and green infrastructure in the Anthropocene.  We approach all of this work through the lens of equity, justice, and planetary health.  Our overarching goal is to engage with external communities and relevant policy actors at the federal, state, and local level on pressing climate issues, with a focus on facilitating just and equitable transitions to a sustainable future.  The Fellow may also have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing clinical work in ELC.

Fellowship applicants should have:

  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental and social justice issues and a track record of community engagement and service
  • One to three years of relevant experience in litigation, legislative, or regulatory practice, and/or policy advocacy, including judicial clerkships and fellowships
  • Strong academic credentials, excellent writing and editing abilities, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and a collaborative spirit
  • Sound judgment and exceptional ethical standards
  • Strong organizational/management skills, attention to detail, and a self-starter attitude
  • Membership in the California bar or a willingness and ability to take the exam at the first opportunity

This position is for a three-year fixed term, with the possibility of renewal.  The Fellow will work primarily in-person on the main Stanford campus.  Salary is based on a formula that is competitive with similar positions, and Stanford provides a generous benefits package.

Applicants should submit a cover letter summarizing their interest in the position and relevant experience, a resume, a writing sample, a list of three professional references, and a law school transcript through http://stanfordcareers.stanford.edu/ , referencing job number _______.  Applications should be submitted as soon as possible and will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires accommodation to perform the essential functions of his or her job.

Stanford Law School seeks to hire the best talent and to promote a safe and secure environment for all members of the university community and its property. To that end, new staff hires must successfully pass a background check prior to starting work at Stanford University.
