Job Description
The Chief of Police is responsible for directing the Police Department which provides or coordinates all aspects of law enforcements for the Texas A&M University at Galveston campuses, to include addressing safety and security issues for campus personnel, buildings, and all state and personal property. The University Police enforce traffic and parking regulations, as well as, University, State and Federal Laws relating to law enforcement and safety requirements involving University faculty, staff and students
Responsibilities
Serve as a role model to officers for continuous learning gin the professional environment.
Establishes goals and objectives for the University police department.
Implement and supervises enforcement of the University Parking and Traffic Regulations.
Assumes direct supervision over all major investigations.
Coordinates what Leadership of other local law enforcement agencies in the areas of common interest.
Interacts with administration an dither department heads and assistant department heads in developing policies and procedures for the Police department and the University.
Participates in construction conferences to officer comments/recommendations regarding design security and construction site security.
Develops contingency plans for various events such as hurricanes, bomb threats, hostage situations, VIP protection plans, containment and/or evacuation plans in event of hazardous material accident, mob/riot control, crowd control at major University events.
Prepares departmental budget and monitors/approves all fiscal expenditures.
Participates in the decision making process in all areas affecting operation of the Department.
Makes operational decisions. Makes final recommendation to Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Administration in all personnel matters (selection, terminating and discipline actions).
Counsels with employees concerning job performance and discipline matters.
Discusses department organization, operation, goals and objectives with all new employees.
Confers with staff, faculty and students (individually and in groups) on matters related to Campus safety and Security.
Originates and implements procedures governing the operation of the Police Department.
Coordinates law enforcement and safety plans for all special events occurring on TAMUG campuses.
Reviews needs for special equipment and property utilized by the Police Department; meets with suppliers and initiated bid specifications.
Participates in product and bid evaluating meetings. performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Administration.
Implements and monitors on-going training programs for all TAMUG peace officer personnel and administrative employees.
Regularly counsel with all TAMUG Policy department personnel to identify problem areas and suggest opportunities for improvement.
Meets on an ad hoc basis with students groups, faculty groups and others to assure the quality of service provided by the TAMUG Police Department meets the expectations of the community.
Takes steps to improve performance if deficiencies are observed or pointed out.
Accepts complaints about the services provided by TAMUG Police Department from all persons.
Assures that all complaints are pursued to a logical conclusion.
Accepts suggestions about operations of TAMUG Police Department from all sources and implements those which will improve service provided in a timely, cost-effective manner.

Licenses, Certifications and Registrations
REQUIRED:
Intermediate Certification from TCLEOSE.
PREFERRED:
Advanced certification from TCLEOSE
Other Requirements
Must pass a rigorous physical examination and psychological evaluation meeting standards established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement standards and Education
