Purpose

To provide for the receipt, disbursement, and recording of cash payments in food service operations within University Housing and Dining (UHD). Provide some training, instruction, and guidance to Cashier I and part-time cashiers.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and verify cash. Greet customers and process customer transactions. Provide excellent customer service. Accurately identify food items, portion sizes, and meal combination packages.

  • Process cash transactions at the register and make change. Process declining balance and credit card payments accurately. Knowledge of required cash handling procedures. Complete paperwork related to cashier operation including transfer of funds reports. Run ending reports; balance drawer and fill out reconciliation sheet. Provide cash control including cashing out the cashiers following the UHD guidelines and policies.

  • Performs opening and closing duties as required. Responsible for all front of the house set up for café. Responsible for set up and maintenance of coffee bar throughout shift. Responsible for maintaining proper cleanliness for the front of house including replenishing supplies for the area. Properly display and face merchandise.

  • Restocks cashier supplies. Assists in restocking shelves and open air coolers. Completes inventory and maintains the overall appearance of the coffee shop and C-store. Performs other duties as required. 

  • Provide instruction and training to the cashiers and part-time cashiers. Serve as lead worker/resource when on duty with part-time employees. Ensure cashier breaks are coordinated and covered during work shifts. Directs efforts of cashier team and dining room attendants. Performs as a team player. Maintains strong working relationships with all departments.

  • Works as a team member in a diverse environment; encourages and promotes diversity.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduation or GED.

  • Two years of experience as a cashier in a large scale operation.

  • Customer service experience and ability to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to complete and maintain University Housing and Dining Food Safety  Training and or ServSafe.

  • Ability to complete and maintain University Housing and Dining cash handling training.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of experience as a cashier in a large scale operation.

  • Experience training or leading staff.

  • Experience as a Cashier in a dining or retail establishment.

  • High volume cashiering experience.

  • Experience using a point-of-sale system (POS).

  • Ability to multi task and work with little supervision. 

  • Professional demeanor and ability to work with a diverse staff and customer base. 

Salary Range

$39,520 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • Uniforms and/or personal protection equipment (furnished).

  • May work in extreme temperatures.

  • May work around chemical fumes.

  • Repetitive use of keyboard at a workstation.

  • Use of manual dexterity.

  • Lifting and moving up to 35 pounds.

  • Pushing, pulling and moving up to 50 pounds.

  • Must successfully complete testing for strength and agility prior to employment.

  • Work days, area and work hours may vary based on the needs of the Unit, and University Housing and Dining (UHD)

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
