Overview

The School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) seeks to be a leading centre for innovation in governance and global public policy. The School is home to the Liu Institute for Global Issues (Liu), the Centre for the Study of Democratic Institutions (CSDI), the Office of Regional and International Community Engagement (ORICE), and the Institute of Asian Research (IAR) which includes 5 distinct research centres focusing on Southeast Asia, India and South Asia, China, Korea, and Japan. With a university-wide mandate, the school offers a wide range of academic and non-degree, non-academic educational programming for students at all levels, faculty, staff, and the community to engage in.  

The School’s flagship academic program, the Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs (MPPGA), is a rigorous professional global public policy program with particular expertise in Asia Pacific and sustainability policy. The program offers an exceptional opportunity for students to examine complex political, socioeconomic, environmental and cultural issues from a global perspective while considering important regional and local dynamics. Academic work is complemented by a suite of supports for early and mid-career professionals such as career advising, work-integrated learning, skill development workshops, and networking opportunities to ready them for the next step in their careers as global change makers.

Job Summary
The Career and Employer Relations Manager is a primarily external facing position responsible for the development, delivery, evaluation, and ongoing renewal of a career and employer relations strategy for the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. The Career and Employer Relations Manager is also responsible for devising and executing strategic plans that significantly elevate the visibility of the school and to help boost revenue generation. This strategy will include marketing and promoting the SPPGA programs to, and cultivating relationships with new and existing local, national, and international employers, alumni, and professional associations, as well as creation of experiential and workplace opportunities (non Co-op) for current students and new graduates. The position will also coach and prepare SPPGA students for employment through the development of career resources and programming. The position will collaborate closely with staff, faculty members, alumni and other career and employer relations professionals within the Faculty of Arts, across UBC, throughout the province, nationally, and internationally.
Organizational Status
This position works under general direction with considerable autonomy. Reports to the Manager, Student Academic Services, SPPGA, and works in a team environment with SPPGA Staff. Works collaboratively with the Graduate Program Manager. Also works in close co-operation with similar positions in professional programs in other career resource and delivery units at UBC such as Arts Co-op and liaises with faculty members and other university staff as appropriate for the delivery and promotion of the program. Provides direction to the MPPGA Program Assistant and may supervise additional staff.
Work Performed

Job Development and Employer Relationship Management (60%)

  • Develops short and long-term business development plans to expand student and alumni hiring opportunities and strengthen the MPPGA and SPPGA brand within relevant industries.
  • Conducts market analyses to determine priority partners in government, industry, non-government organizations and associations, and more broadly in civil society locally, nationally and internationally for student and graduate hiring in line with the SPPGA Partnership Strategy.
  • Cultivates and sustains employer relationships and an extensive professional network through research, personalized outreach such as cold calling, group presentations, emailing, holding meetings, and attending key industry and academic conferences and career fairs.
  • Advises and guides employers to develop appropriate and equitable work integrated learning and post-graduate opportunities for SPPGA students including direct hiring programs.
  • Engages SPPGA faculty and alumni around opportunities for student employment. Includes liaising with Arts Alumni and alumni UBC to explore partnerships with specific alumni.
  • Maintains current employer and recruiting trend expertise by consulting appropriate publications, conducting research, building thought leader relationships, and attending networking events and conferences.
  • Reports regularly on benchmark goals for lead generation, employer contact and job posting conversion rates and maintains up to date employer CRM.
  • Collaborates with SPPGA Marketing, Communications, and Events portfolio to develop effective communications channels to promote employment opportunities with SPPGA students.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director, designs and manages an Advisory Board to advise on career and curriculum efforts at SPPGA.
  • Manages all aspects of on-campus recruitment programs and services to ensure excellence service is provided to employers and organizations looking to engage with SPPGA.
  • Collaborates with faculty and other on-campus recruitment organizers and business development partners such as Arts Co-op to represent the university to employers.
  • Works to develop and facilitate new and innovative methods for employers to engage with SPPGA students.
  • Liaises with Assistant Director to create new and foster existing partnerships to leverage strategic opportunities, forge financial collaborations, and other synergistic opportunities to advance shared goals on student/alumni career preparedness and employer recruitment.
  • Shares current labour market and industry trends as well as employer feedback on key employability skills with SPPGA curriculum designers and staff.
  • Travels, as required, to key markets outside of BC for in-person client meetings.

Strategy Development and Management (10%)

  • Develops, implements, manages, and evaluates the SPPGA Career and Employer Relations strategy and other career focused activities including setting goals and metrics for evaluation.
  • Ensures activities are in line with SPPGA’s strategic priorities, UBC wide strategies such as the Inclusion Action Plan and the Indigenous Strategic Plan. Integrates services, where appropriate, from Graduate and Post-doctoral Studies and the Centre for Student Involvement and Careers into career services model.
  • Conducts research and analysis to identify student and employer needs, and best practices and employment trends in public policy and global affairs and regularly integrates new findings into the strategy, continually looking to improve the MPPGA career opportunities and programming.
  • Regularly collects data and feedback from a broad range of sources and stakeholders to evaluate the overall strategy delivery and effectiveness based on defined goals and metrics and implements changes as required.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of a SPPGA partnership strategy.

Career Advising and Skills Development (30%)

  • Leads on high level planning, delivery, and evaluation of various Curricular and co-curricular career-related learning opportunities
  • Applies and ensures strong alignment with current and relevant career development theories and principles to all career-related activity within SPPGA.
  • Develops, plans and executes special events, programs and workshops for SPPGA students, alumni and current and prospective employers such as career fairs, panel events, and mentorship & networking events collaborating closely with the Program Manager.
  • Provides one-on-one coaching and career counselling to SPPGA students and alumni to support them in exploring relevant career opportunities that are aligned with and best suited to advance their career goals.
  • Supports the equitable and diverse representation of career paths and opportunities available to SPPGA students in all career-related activity.
  • With support from the MPPGA Program Assistant, maintains detailed records of student interactions, employment statistics, employment reports, and placements.
  • Collaborates with the Marketing, Communications, and Events portfolio to develop timely communications, to promote events, encourage connections and partnerships, develop a social media presence and increase brand awareness consistent with the SPPGA program marketing practices.

Performs other related duties as needed.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Poor judgement will negatively affect opportunities for MPPGA students and the Program and SPPGA’s reputation. Failure to build appropriate relationships with employers will reflect negatively on the quality of the program and overall recruitment in the future.

Incorrect decisions, judgment, and poor relationship management will directly affect UBC’s reputation with students, faculty, staff, and the broader community and could cause embarrassment and loss of credibility to the university, alienate existing and potential students as well as jeopardize relationships with employers and alumni, resulting in a potential financial loss and loss of reputation or critical relationships.

Supervision Received
Works independently under the general direction of the Manager, Student Academic Services, SPPGA.

Supervision Given
Provides direction to the MPPGA Program Assistant. Hires and manages student assistants and occasional contract staff and work performed by outside suppliers.
Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of five years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree preferred. Thorough knowledge of and experience with job/business development and building strong relationships. Broad industry knowledge, extensive professional networks, and experience in current best practices in job development. Previous experience working in careers at the post-secondary level with graduate students. Familiarity with relevant and current career development/education strategies, Canadian Association of Career Educators (CACEE) standards and guidelines for ethical recruitment, human rights, labour legislation and current human resources practices. Experiencing designing, implementing, and evaluating job/career strategies. Knowledge of equity, diversity, and inclusion considerations in career development and business development including a commitment to anti-racism and inclusive excellence, and the ability to apply an intersectional anti-racist lens to all career-related activity.  Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Takes initiative in learning about language and issues relating to equity and diversity. Competence or interest in developing competence in working with Indigenous students, colleagues, and employers. Strong computer skills are required, ie, Microsoft Office and database management. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational planning and marketing skills. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous and effective manner. Ability to manage conflict in a calm, non-confrontational manner and by exercising sound judgment. Ability to exercise tact and discretion. Experience working collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-faceted team environment. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure in order to meet deadlines. Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and the occasional weekend throughout the year. Ability to travel locally, domestically and internationally.
