Automation Engineer – Novartis – NIBR San Diego JJ


Job Description

1000x! That’s how many times faster our custom robots perform lab tasks compared to traditional manual methods. As a new Automation Engineer at Novartis San Diego, you will be operating such robotic systems performing transient and stable protein production in mammalian cells. Your role will be critical to the production of high quality proteins for both biotherapeutics programs as well as early stage drug discovery activities such as high throughput screening. You will be a key contributor to our mission of reimaging medicine to improve and extend people’s lives.
Your Responsibilities:
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• The operation, optimization, and maintenance of a state-of-the-art high-throughput protein production system
• Working closely with engineers and biologists to develop new automation workflows and instrumentation
• The adaption of standard bench assays to automated and high throughput instrumentation.
• Effectively troubleshooting production runs in real time and communication of findings to technical personnel
• Exhibiting a high degree of self-motivation, organizational and time management skills, and an acute attention to detail

Minimum Requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:
• A bachelor’s degree in biochemistry or related field, ideally with a minimum 1-2 years of relevant lab experience in a pharmaceutical, CRO or related industry
• Strong engagement, interpersonal communication skills, and ability to thrive in a dynamic matrixed working environment
• A strong aptitude for and interest in automation, computer programming, and related technologies
Desirable Requirements:
• Experience working with laboratory automation equipment, scientific assays, mammalian cell culture, and protein expression and purification is highly desirable.
• Experience writing scripts for Tecan EVO or Tecan Fluent liquid handlers is preferred
• Experience working with engineers and scientists to develop new automation platforms is a plus
