Associate Architect – 119219

This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, which includes a combination of onsite and remote work.

Under direction of the Project Design Principal Architect, the Project Design Associate Architect will independently lead project design teams, including but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, vibration, acoustical and structural engineers to develop architectural projects involving all occupancy classifications in University buildings on campus and owned or leased buildings off campus. Major responsibilities include development of schematic designs, design development, construction documentation, development of finish material palettes and implementation of design work, project details, and programming for Minor Capital renovations.

Independently perform the creation of construction drawings, details, and editing of UC San Diego standard written specifications, and be capable of mentoring junior architectural drafting staff in the creation and completion of architectural construction drawing packages. Assist in creating and maintaining an architectural Revit and AutoCAD library of standard details and good construction methods information. Assist with the creation of project schedules and budgets for all phases of the work. Use working knowledge of the California Building Code (CBC), of the project team and own experience to solve complex problems from concept phase through construction.

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training. Thorough working knowledge of architectural, engineering, and construction practices.

  • Thorough working knowledge of building and construction, design, construction contract administration and California Building Codes, including full understanding of industry practices. Must be proficient with and possess a working knowledge of the California Building Code (CBC).

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Title-24 California Construction Codes including Part 2 (California Building Code) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), Division of State Architect (DSA) and State Fire Marshal (SFM).

  • Thorough project management skills, including skill to manage complex projects. Thorough working knowledge of standard design and construction sequences and durations necessary to prepare, monitor, and manage detailed project schedule.

  • Demonstrated ability and thorough knowledge to provide technical advice on construction practices, methods and procedures, and to prepare drawings and specifications for major building projects.

  • Proven ability to manage contractors and maintain compliance to the agreed-upon scope of work and budget.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with design and construction contracts, contract law, public contracting code, and construction claims procedures. Ability to draft modifications to standard agreements consistent with Regental Policy and in coordination with legal counsel.

  • Professional design experience to effectively direct and review the preparation of design and construction documents, review and approve contractor submittals, and to effectively resolve field problems during construction.

  • Demonstrated work direction and general oversight skills necessary to simultaneously direct several professional teams working on unique and technically difficult projects in a complex administrative environment.

  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of various computer software programs including, but not limited to Microsoft Office, Outlook, Revit, Autocad and eBuilder.

  • Thorough organizational and analytical skills including skill to provide high quality control. Detail oriented to accurately proof contracts and other documents. Thorough skills in problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution.

  • Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills including high level political acumen. Ability to effectively present project/program design and status issues to client groups. Ability to work effectively with user departments and be responsive to their needs.

  • Proven ability to promote, develop and maintain cooperative relationships with people from diverse backgrounds including the campus community, vendors and the general public.
