Assistant Professor of Tourism Management

Health & Human Performance

University of Tennessee, Chattanooga

The Department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga College of Health, Education & Professional Studies invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Tourism Management beginning August 1, 2023

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the broad area of Sport, Outdoor Recreation, and Tourism Management (SORT). A program that recognizes the intersection of these disciplines is seeking a candidate with a tourism background who can teach existing undergraduate courses in the core curriculum and develop topical courses within the candidate’s expertise. The program’s focus is to highlight the economic and social impacts of tourism to the southeast Tennessee region, rather than an emphasis on hospitality. Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in tourism and/or special events. The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership for the tourism discipline; supervise internships and field experiences; advise undergraduate students; engage in community-based projects; demonstrate productive scholarly activity including supervising student research; interact positively with colleagues; and serve on department/university committees.
UTC’s blended sport, outdoor recreation, and tourism program offers a unique opportunity to capitalize on Chattanooga’s emergent tourism destination status. Voted twice as America’s “Best Outdoor City,” Chattanooga provides a world-class platform to research and instruct sport and outdoor-related tourism concepts.  Benefiting from regional growth, the SORT program has developed relationships with a number of community organizations to provide applied learning experiences for students, including both on and off-campus events, community-based projects, undergraduate research, field experiences, and culminating internships.
Housed within the department of Health and Human Performance, SORT students and faculty alike, take full advantage of the thriving downtown metropolitan location, innovative city-planning, and surrounding outdoor amenities.  Moreover, Chattanooga is located just 2 hours from Atlanta, Nashville, and Knoxville.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in Tourism or related field at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to teach in the core SORT curriculum and tourism-specific courses, such as Principles of Tourism, Tourism Impacts, and Tourism Planning
  • Previous experience collaborating with community partners
  • Demonstrate an ability to produce scholarly work
  • Experience with multi-modal course delivery
  • Outstanding verbal and writing skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous university teaching experience
  • Evidence of cultivating community partnerships
  • Professional experience in the tourism industry
  • Demonstrated experience teaching, researching and/or design & implementations of outdoor and sport-related special events, festivals, etc.
