Job Summary Dalhousie University’s Psychology and Neuroscience Department is the top Psychology and Neuroscience Department in Atlantic Canada. The department is one-of-a-kind and was established for research into what makes humans and animals behave the way that they do, as well as to understand the structure and function of the nervous system. Reporting to the Department Administrator, the Workshop Technician, Carpentry is responsible for the operation of the departmental woodworking and machine shop. The Workshop Technician designs, constructs, maintains and repairs equipment and apparatus used in teaching and research primarily by the Psychology and Neuroscience Department staff and students, as well as potentially other departments in the Faculty of Science.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled work (including finish carpentry, woodworking, gas and electric welding, tool and dye work, sheet metal, machining, pipefitting and painting) in the design, construction, maintenance and repair of equipment and apparatus for teaching and research purposes.
  • Advise students and faculty in the areas of design, construction, pricing and workability, completing time and pricing options for projects, apparatus, and research tools.
  • Oversee a woodworking/machine shop, which includes maintaining supplies, tracking work performed, performing minor repairs, etc.
  • Receive goods, log deliveries, verify packing slips, inspect packages for damages.

Note Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications College diploma or certification in machining and woodworking/carpentry, plus three years related experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Experience working independently, as well as with others, is required.
Assets Welding certification is preferred. Experience working with students and faculty members in an academic setting, as well as excellent interpersonal skills are considered strong assets.
