Primary duties include assisting the northeast regional wildlife management team with wildlife damage management, in particular deer, turkey, and goose depredation which could include fencing, hazing, and/or lethal control. Additional duties could include being a primary observer while conducting aerial deer surveys while low level flying in a fixed wing aircraft. Wildlife mortality investigations, as well as assisting with equipment maintenance, posting of Walk-In Areas and Game Production Areas, data entry, and educational events are additional duty opportunities. This position may require occasionally working evenings and/or weekends and in adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications
Applicant must be enrolled as a part time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
The ideal candidate will have a general knowledge of equipment repair, troubleshooting abilities, and operating vehicles in four wheel drive while pulling a trailer in adverse weather conditions. The ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly is also a requirement.
