Description
The purpose of this position is to provide technical support to Agency staff as related to the development and maintenance of fish and wildlife habitats, facilities, equipment and access.
The incumbent’s primary work assignment is the Mattaponi Work Unit consisting of the Land’s End, Mattaponi, Mattaponi Bluffs, Pettigrew, Oakley Forest, and Robert W. Duncan WMAs, but will also work on other Department lands and facilities throughout Region 4 as directed.
The Incumbent works as part of a team to maintain and enhance wildlife populations on assigned WMAs by manipulating habitats, prescribed burning and wildfire suppression, participating in population and habitat research projects, and developing and maintaining WMA facilities, infrastructure, and equipment.
This position also provides technical assistance to the public and supports operation and maintenance of boating access facilities within Region 4 as directed.
Additionally, the position assists biologists and foresters with the collection of biological data needed for promulgating wildlife regulations and making wildlife habitat and population management decisions.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Incumbent should possess knowledge of and technical proficiency in multiple areas of wildlife management work.
Knowledge of or ability to learn habits and habitat requirements of wildlife and habitat management principles.
Knowledge of skills and trades to include carpentry, mechanics, masonry, welding, and plumbing. Knowledge of a variety of active and passive wildlife population sampling methods and techniques.
Skilled in the use of relevant tools and equipment to include general maintenance of farm and heavy equipment, implements, vehicles, chain saws and small tools.
Skilled in the collection and recording of wildlife population and user data.
The ability to apply knowledge and skills to develop and manipulate habitats to improve populations or enhance recreational opportunities
Skilled in the use of PC and Microsoft Office software, specifically Word, Excel and Access.
Skilled in the collection and recording of physical, chemical and biological data.
The ability to follow instructions to implement management or research projects with minimal supervision and lead special projects as required.
The ability to perform manual labor to include moderate to heavy lifting in excess of 40 pounds. The ability to work in varying indoor, outdoor, wet and dry climates and in remote locations.
The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
The ability to effectively manage relationships with the public at-large, supervisors, general public and co-workers; and ability to interpret and analyze data.
Possession of, or eligibility for, a valid Virginia driver’s license with appropriate CDL designation for assigned equipment.
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Biological Sciences or a related field.
Progressively responsible experience in fisheries and wildlife management, and experience in building and construction practices and trades.
Certified Prescribed Burn Manager, DOF Qualified Wildland Firefighter (Level 2 or 3), USFS Qualified Wildland Firefighter (Level 1), and/or Certified pesticide applicator for right-of-ways and agricultural preferred.
Special Requirements
A current CDL, Class A or B Driver’s License or must be obtained within six months of hire date .
Must be able to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicators License within 1 year of employment.
