Position Overview Working under the general direction of the Machine Shop Supervisor, the incumbent of this position is responsible for: fabricating, installing and repairing mechanical systems, researching equipment and building structural components. Repairing and maintaining building HVAC and mechanical equipment and performing certified welding on structural components, steam, and chilled water distribution systems. This will require the incumbent to drive to-and-from work locations.
This is an essential position that will be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or University closure.

Unit Overview Facilities’ mission is to provide a safe, aesthetic, functional, and efficient learning environment. Facilities is comprised of several departments including Building Trades and Maintenance, Building Services, Landscape and Hardscape shops, and Administrative Services. Working together cohesively, these groups accomplish Facilities’ mission by performing maintenance, repair, renovation, and cleaning of all buildings, grounds, and infrastructure on campus. An essential unit on campus, Facilities meets all the needs of campus buildings from floor polishing, finding and repairing leaks, to complete space renovation including code review and design development.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Uses flame-cutting, plasma arc cutting, OAW, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, soldering and brazing to join, cut or repair ferrous and non-ferrous metals in the shop and in the field.

Position Responsibilities

Key Accountability Repairs and maintains mechanical and maintenance equipment by:
Job Duties
  • Determining cause of failure or wear and selection appropriate repair/replace method; disassembling, cleaning, and inspecting failed parts.
  • Rebuilding and manufacture of replacement parts of complete mechanical assemblies such as pumps, blowers, motors, gearboxes, hydraulic cylinders and compressors.
  • Fabricating custom-made parts such as housings, sleeves, bushings, shafts and mounting systems.
  • Replacing defective components.
  • Heating, straightening, and welding damaged parts.
  • Aligning, setup, and lubrication of repaired systems to facilitate operation as designed.
Key Accountability Fabricates, installs and renovates mechanical systems, research equipment and building structural components by:
Job Duties
  • Providing fabrication and maintenance support for all shops within facilities.
  • Communicating and coordinating with supervisors, coworkers, faculty and students to develop efficient, cost-effective plans.
  • Interpreting plans, blueprints, schematics, manuals and verbal instructions to determine project scope.
  • Performing journeyman quality welding, cutting and shaping operations in various alloys using all related hand and power tools.
  • Fitting, aligning and assembling fabricated parts; cleaning and finishing projects to meet specifications.
  • Understanding ferrous and non-ferrous metal alloys, plastics, resins and other synthetic materials, their typical uses, thermal and wear properties and heat treatments to ensure appropriate use and selection.
  • Using knowledge of sheet metal, layout, bending, cutting and forming procedures to produce accurate work
Key Accountability Contributes to the team effort and meet University of Idaho safety initiative by:
Job Duties
  • Responding to emergency calls.
  • Ensuring that employees reporting to them are adequately trained, equipped, monitored and guided.
  • Developing, approving, and/or implementing safety procedures and programs as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications

Required Experience
  • 4 years of experience working as a welder/fabricator in a related field.
Required Education None
Required Licensures, Certifications or other
  • Certification in weld qualification procedures for E70xx low hydrogen electrodes in 3g and 4g positions for structural applications or must have the ability to obtain this certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Must possess: a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving University vehicles.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
Additional Preferred
  • 2 years post-secondary training in a related field
  • Experience with:
    • HVAC mechanical systems fabrications and repair
    • Mitigating hazards associated with hazardous materials such as lead based paint and asbestos.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move items weighing approximately 50 pounds, climb ladders, bend, stoop, and work in awkward positions
  • Participate in a medical surveillance program and respirator fit test
Working Conditions
  • Work in inclement weather conditions
  • Crawl through small tunnels that are hot, muddy, and wet
  • Performing work in confined spaces using equipment and appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) as required.
