The Visitor Center at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is seeking a creative and dependable temporary Visitor Center Assistant to help with our daily operations and programs. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a world leader in the study, appreciation, and conservation of birds. We are dedicated to engaging a diversity of people in learning about birds and protecting the planet.

The Lab’s Visitor Center in Sapsucker Woods offers opportunities for visitors to connect with the Lab and learn about its mission to interpret and conserve the earth’s biological diversity. Additionally, the Visitor Center offers a suite of virtual programs including paid workshops, informal webinars, and family-oriented programs. The Visitor Center at the Lab is also home to the Adelson Library, a unit of the Cornell University Library system.

The Visitor Center Assistant will work to support our public-facing efforts. The assistant will:

  • Provide building tours for visitors

  • Lead hands-on, family-friendly weekend Exploration Station programs

  • Table at community events and assist with other outreach activities

  • Staff the Adelson Library by fulfilling book requests, shelving, scanning, and other tasks as needed

  • Welcome and orient visitors to Adelson Library and Visitor Center displays and features

  • Depending on skills and interests, assist with special projects such as photography and video, curriculum development, designing flyers and displays, and/or leading bird or nature walks

This position is an exciting opportunity for those interested in informal education from a wide range of backgrounds.

This 6-month position will work a flexible schedule, covering 10-15 hours/week, on weekdays and some weekends between the hours of 10AM to 5PM at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Pay is $18.00/hour. There is a TCAT bus stop in front of the building and free ample parking is also available.

Preferred Qualifications:

Scientific literacy • Strong interest in birds and good bird identification skills • Familiarity with PowerPoint, InDesign, Photoshop, Zoom, and other online platforms • Photography and/or Videography skills or interest
