The British Embassy in Madrid is part of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) worldwide network of 270 Posts, representing British political, military, economic, and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a new Information and Technology Support Officer (ITSO) based in Embassy Madrid (covering Madrid and Spain network posts). The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining high standards of service whilst meeting the diverse requirements of IT security, systems integrity, customer support and improving internal processes via automation within a M365 environment. We are looking for a highly professional individual, flexible, adept at juggling competing demands, a natural problem solver who is a good team player who thrives on improving processes and sharing knowledge.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Proactively maintain and support the Information and Communications Technology infrastructure and client systems in line with security procedures in Madrid and the wider Spain Network.

  • Carry out system monitoring, problem resolution and manage the IT incident escalation procedures (to FCDO 2nd-3rd level support/and or external suppliers).

  • Coordinate IT asset management

  • Support video-conferencing and hybrid meetings for internal and external events.

  • Produce high quality communications and IT user guides in English and Spanish for users at all levels.

  • Proactively strive to improve the quality of service and provide sound technical solutions taking into account  diverse customer needs and security requirements (develop using apps available via M365).

  • Create and maintain a positive, professional and trusting working relationships with a wide range of with stakeholders.

  • Proactively upskill staff via informal or formal training sessions.

  • Occasionally work additional hours (including weekends) and travel as required to Spain Consular posts.

  • Ability to lift and shift heavy items – lifting equipment, install cabling and connections throughout office i.e. under desks, in patch cabinets and server rooms.

  • Full professional proficiency in English and Spanish, both verbal and written, with excellent communications skills (a minimum of C1 level, according to CEFR*).

  • A recognised IT qualification or degree.

  • Good IT and networking skills with in-depth knowledge of Microsoft products: MS Windows 10/11 & M365 (including MS Sharepoint, MS PowerBI, MS Lists, MS Forms, etc).

  • Able to develop solutions, automate processes via apps on M365 platform (Microsoft power Platform).

  • Able to install OS and M365 from ‘off-the-shelf’ laptops and desktops.

  • Hardware skills: Able to change printer/workstation components as well as troubleshooting general hardware issues.

  • Fine attention to detail and strong analytical skills.

  • Qualifications: CompTIA A+ and Networks+

  • Experience in Telephony and VoIP

  • Experience working in data centres and internet circuit installation

  • LAN design and WIFI networks integrating security (Firewall configuration, etc).

  • Clean Spanish Driving licence

This is a full-time, permanent contract at AO grade level, based in Madrid. This role will be office-based.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law. 

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.

Working patterns: Normal working hours are 37.5 per week: 8.00am to 4:00pm from Monday to Friday.

Learning & Development: We offer time and financial support for the successful candidate to take advantage of professional learning and development opportunities inside and outside of the organisation. All new hires undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses that must be completed in order to pass probation.
