Improving career pathways for women in under-represented areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM)

Building on its strengths as Australia’s leading regional University, UniSQ’s vision is to be renowned for innovation and excellence in education, student experience, research and engagement. Guided by our core values of respect, integrity and excellence, the University’s Strategic Plan 2021-2025 outlines our commitment to creating and sharing knowledge, transforming lives and solving the problems that matter to our world.

Women have historically been, and continue to be, significantly under-represented in the STEMM disciplines of Astrophysics, Mathematics, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Engineering, which may reflect past disadvantage. The University recognises the important role that equal opportunity measures set out by anti-discrimination law can make in creating opportunities for women, including in the disciplines mentioned above.

In support of our dedication to gender equity and the University’s Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) Athena Swan Action Plan, we are seeking to appoint two Postdoctoral Research Fellows for Women in STEMM. These roles are only open to applicants who identify as women or non-binary.

Who you are

As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will have a developing research profile and will actively supervise honours and postgraduate research student projects, whilst carrying out activities to maintain and develop scholarly and professional activities relevant to your field.

What you’ll do

In this three-year fixed-term appointment you will primarily focus on research activities in your first year. As part of broader capability development, in your second year you will begin to engage in limited independent teaching and the development of your skills, with increased teaching responsibilities in your third year. Appropriate professional development and other opportunities will be provided to build your teaching skills and experience. There will be an opportunity to convert to a continuing teaching and research academic appointment at the conclusion of this appointment, subject to satisfactory performance.

What will help you succeed

You will either have a PhD or be within three months of submitting a thesis to be near completion of a PhD in either Astrophysics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mathematics or Information Technology. You will also have professional experience and research expertise in your area, including engaging in research that provides the opportunity to collaborate with others and seeks to attract research funding. You will be encouraged to participate in capacity development and reflective approaches to building teaching skills.

For further information about this role, please contact Professor John Bell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) via 07 3470 4124 or [email protected].
