Job Description

Vet Care Tech Surgery: Successful candidate assist team clinicians and care-giving colleagues with the reception, treatment, and monitoring of all patients within the Small Animal Surgery unit. Additionally the successful candidates will oversee and instruct professional veterinary students in preparation of animals and equipment for medical procedures and delivery of care. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: organizes, directs, and provides helpful and collegial assistance to professional students, clinicians, residents, and technical students during receiving appointment hours; coordinates with reception; assists with patient exams; prepares and labels specimens; assists with receiving surgical emergencies, client communication with phone calls and release instructions; prepares animals and equipment for surgery (clips, shaves and scrubs body area for operation); sets up appropriate equipment and instruments for each case; prepares & labels specimens obtained in surgery; assists surgeons during surgical procedures using aseptic techniques; cleans and disinfects operating rooms, equipment and related areas; demonstrates and observes veterinary students in operating room procedures; and other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will be expected to work 40 hours a week on first shift with required on-call hours and holidays based on a team rotation. Evening and weekend hours will be eligible for shift differential. Successful candidate must be a Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of Ohio and complete a background check.

 

Physical Requirements

Standing for long periods of time

Pushing/pulling/lifting up to 50 pounds

Exposure to animal dander and/or zoonotic diseases

Exposure to needle sticks, hazardous chemicals, and/or bio hazardous waste

Required Education

Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine.

Per Classified Civil Svc Specs or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience

State of Ohio Registered Veterinary Technician (Required) at the time of hire

Desired Experience

Previous experience as a licensed, registered veterinary technician and/or veterinary assistant.

Additional Information:

The Targeted Hiring Range for this position is $19.86-$24.81 per hour.

By the start of employment, all newly hired employees must receive at least the first dose of a two-dose series or a single dose of a one-dose series COVID-19 vaccination. Individuals who choose a two-dose series vaccination must receive the second dose within 45 days of their start date. Proof of vaccination will be required at time of hire.

Candidates may request a medical or religious exemption from the vaccination requirement. Campus employees may also request an exemption for personal reasons. Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, College of Medicine or OSUP Employees are not eligible for personal exemptions. All exemptions are subject to Ohio State’s approval and subject to change, including revocation, due to legal and regulatory requirements.
