JOB DESCRIPTION 

 

Position Title: Director, Cancer Metabolism & Physiology Research Initiative 

At Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC), our goal is to reduce the devastating burden of cancer through research, education, and the delivery of the finest patient care.  Today, UHealth plays a vital role in the community thanks to our groundbreaking research and patient care for people in Florida, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.   

POSITION SUMMARY  

The Director of the Cancer Metabolism and Physiology Research Initiative will work closely with the SCCC Director, Deputy Director, Associate Directors and research program leaders to plan the scientific direction of cancer metabolism and physiology research at SCCC with a special focus on promoting interactions between research programs and translational cancer metabolism and physiology research. The Director will work collaboratively with SCCC Associate Directors to oversee scientific program activities including community outreach and engagement, research education and training and diversity, equity and inclusionThe Director of this initiative will set program goals, strategies, and priorities for a new Cancer Metabolism & Physiology Research Initiative which will focus on the basic science, translational and clinical aspects of: 1) cancer metabolism, with a particular emphasis on energy metabolism and metabolic reprogramming in cancer cells, and 2) how cancer cells engage with normal physiologic processes to redirect them for the purposes of tumor progression and treatment resistance. 

  

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (proposed responsibilities)  

 

Provide dedicated scientific partnership and resources to advise, develop, and implement a model for cancer metabolism and physiology with the goal of motivating ongoing research and inspiring novel research 

Responsible for incorporation of scientific developments pertaining to metabolic reprogramming, metabolic flexibility, altered pathways of metabolism, and tumor initiation initiatives and diagnostic programs into patient care. 

Work to facilitate the development and implementation of new metabolic therapies. 

Serve as expert internal resource to advise on basic, translational and clinical cancer metabolism and physiology research.  

Promote interdisciplinary research, and educational programs relevant to cancer metabolism and physiology research initiatives of SCCC. 

Improve and seek opportunities for collaboration with existing cutting-edge clinical genomics and cancer genomics programs and scientific oversight of sample testing and data interpretation.  

Serve as liaison with other research leaders and/or Departments to ensure integration of molecular, genomic, and proteomic technology into pathology analysis, reporting and prognostic prediction. 

Collaborate with SCCC research program and shared resource leaders to align goals and objectives with the SCCC five-year Strategic Plan.  

 

 

Position Requirements:  

PhD or MD Degree. Qualifications should include a demonstrated track record of excellence in research, ability to secure extramural and preferably NCI-funding, and peer-reviewed publications.   Experience in an academic medical institution environment preferred.  Experience in implementation of programs relating to cancer metabolism, molecular biology, genetics, metabolism-related cancer therapies.      Excellent leadership skills, organizational skills, communication, prioritizing tasks, detail-oriented and cultural sensitivity required.
