As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.The Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry at TU Wien is seeking to fill the position of a University Professor in the field of Organic Chemistry in a permanent contractual employment relationship (full-time position) starting October 2025.This professorship is established according to § 99(4) UG 2002. The position is exclusively available to TU Wien lecturers in accordance with § 94(2)(2) UG (permanent civil servant status according to §§ 170 ff BDG, with the official title of “Associate University Professor”) or associate professors (§ 27 Collective Agreement) at TU Wien.In accordance with the development plan of the Faculty of Technical Chemistry, the professorship for Organic Chemistry is intended to strengthen the primary research area “Sustainability, Energy, Environment”, in particular the development field “Green Chemistry and Catalysis”, as well as the research fields “Biological and Bioactive Materials” and “Structure-Property-Relationship” of the research focus “Materials and Matter” at TU Wien and represents a central position in a core subject of chemistry. The focus is on organic-synthetic methods to produce organic compounds with interesting material properties or biological activities. In addition, a collaborative and interdisciplinary scientific environment is to be created and strengthened through cooperation with existing research activities at the Vienna University of Technology and with other universities and research institutions.The Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry at TU Wien pursues synergistic research approaches at the interface between organic synthetic chemistry and the life sciences as part of the research area “Organic and Biological Chemistry”. The advertised § 99 (4) Professorship of Organic Chemistry is intended to decisively strengthen this area and primarily include research activities in the field of the fundamentals of organic chemistry, such as the development of new (catalytic) reactions.As one of the core subjects of chemistry, organic chemistry plays a key role in enabling high-quality research on interface topics, such as those between chemistry and medicine/biology. The focus is on the new or further development of synthetic methods and strategies that make organic compounds accessible for special applications (as materials or bioactive compounds) with high efficiency. Organic chemistry is therefore closely linked to bioorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry and medicinal chemistry, for example.Specifically, the following is expected of the successful applicant in research:

  • Experience in organic chemistry with focus on catalytic methods, heterocyclic chemistry, C-H activation and mechanochemical synthesis
  • Experience in organic synthesis chemistry (experimental methods, substance purification and structural characterization)
  • Experience in the development, investigation and application of new catalytic reactions in organic synthesis
  • Experience in the synthesis of biologically active compounds and organic materials
  • Experience in drafting and filing patents
  • Proven experience in working with national and/or international scientific and industrial partners
  • Experience in the management of publicly funded research projects
  • Successful acquisition of third-party funded projects (e.g. FWF, FFG, EU-Horizon, etc.)
  • Experience in the management of an organizational unit such as a research group, a research division, or an institute

The tasks of a university professor at TU Wien include, in addition to research, teaching (in German and English) in Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programs as well as participation in the management of the institute and the faculty. The main task is to impart the necessary knowledge and methods in organic chemistry, in particular with regard to the development of synthesis strategies (retrosynthesis) and catalytic methods. Courses in the Bachelor’s degree program in Technical Chemistry and the Master’s degree program in Technical Chemistry are to be expanded or newly established accordingly.The Faculty of Technical Chemistry, one of the eight faculties of TU Wien, plays an active role in the national and international research sector and has an excellent reputation. The main research areas include (i) Chemistry and Technology of Materials, (ii) Sustainability, Energy and Environment, and (iii) Life Science Technologies. Intensive cooperation is expected within the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry and the Faculty of Technical Chemistry, as well as with thematically related institutes of other faculties.

Your profile:
  • A doctorate or PhD degree from a domestic or equivalent foreign university or research institution or the completion of an equivalent scientific qualification
  • International post-doc experience at a university or other research institution (ideally several years)
  • A teaching qualification (venia docendi) obtained at a domestic or equivalent foreign university or an academic qualification equivalent to a teaching qualification as a university lecturer
  • Scientific reputation, proven by publications in internationally renowned scientific journals, patents, scientific lectures, activities as a reviewer, organization of scientific events, prizes, etc.
  • Ability to build networks, demonstrated e.g. through cooperation with foreign universities or research institutions
  • Experience in the acquisition, execution and management of research projects
  • The aptitude and willingness, as well as experience in a management function of an organizational unit (research group, research area, or institute) at TU Wien
  • Successful acquisition of national and international third-party funded projects
  • The pedagogical and didactic aptitude for academic teaching in the above-mentioned subject area in English and German
  • Experience in the supervision of students’ academic work
  • Ability and willingness to work in the management of the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry and the Faculty of Technical Chemistry
  • Social and gender competence, as well as experience in the promotion of young talent and women
  • Willingness to relocate the center of your life to Vienna (on-site presence)
  • If you do not have sufficient knowledge of German, you are expected to be willing to learn German as soon as possible, which will enable you to work in the management of the institute, the faculty and university committees, as well as to teach in Bachelor’s programs
