Position Summary Bryant University seeks a University Photographer to join the growing University Marketing and Communication team.
The University Photographer is responsible for highly skilled, artistic, and creative photography that captures Bryant’s people, places, and activities. This work supports a variety of creative, editorial, and news needs and channels, including Bryant News, Bryant.edu, other web properties, social media, print, and other digital media. Subject matter includes a high volume of campus scenes and editorial subjects to illustrate Bryant’s unique teaching, learning, research, and campus life. Portraiture, and news-focused photography of events is also required.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Identifies photographic needs at both project and departmental level, recommending approaches that will communicate intended messages persuasively and powerfully.
  • Performs specialized photo assignments that require extensive knowledge of photographic equipment and techniques, including lighting, use of flash, composition, background selection, exposure, subject management, and other skills of the craft.
  • Plans photo sessions from concept to completion, choosing locations and scheduling and directing subjects for best results, and capturing information relevant to the content.
  • Captures aerial photography using a drone.
  • Independently blocks time each week, without supervision, capturing the “great pictures” of Bryant, those that inform, enlighten, and inspire Bryant’s constituencies.
  • Creates content for Bryant University’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube with fresh, creative, and inspiring images that reflect the University in unique and interesting ways.
  • Provides critical input as a key member of the editorial team in University Marketing and Communications accommodating a wide range of department needs for creative visual storytelling.
  • Counsels colleagues on all available and emerging photographic capabilities and options; advises on to possible applications and schedules photo shoots.
  • Evaluates freelance photographers and makes referrals when appropriate.
  • Independently builds relationships with faculty, students and staff that generate leads on good stories that support Bryant’s strategic priorities.
  • Manages post-production of finished imagery, including color correction, print and digital image production, and production for use on the department’s social media channels.
  • Writes photo captions and other meta data as needed.
  • Provides institution-wide leadership on the digital management of Bryant’s photographic records archives.
  • Supervises and manages student photo interns including recruiting, training, and scheduling of student interns. Serves as an informal coach and mentor to students.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications This position is best filled by an individual with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) plus 5-7 years of experience as a photographer, with a broad portfolio of work including portraiture, architecture, and event photography. The candidate must demonstrate proven technical skills in digital and photographic techniques, tools and equipment as well as expertise in photo editing technologies including Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. They must have a developed aesthetic sensibility and creativity, as demonstrated by a portfolio of compelling visual imagery with deep knowledge and ongoing interest in current trends and issue in photography. The individual must have a proven ability to collaborate with editors, social media managers, graphic designers, and marketing managers to deliver visual imagery that complements narrative storytelling as well as ability to lead projects and assign freelance photographers to cover local, national, and international stories as needed. The candidate must have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write captions that explain visual stories in a few sentences, as well as the ability to interact with campus-wide constituencies. Ability to work independently on multiple projects simultaneously and to work under tight deadlines is a must.
