Then join our accomplished team!Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsSpecific RequirementsYour personal sphere of influence:The “Pharmaceutical Biotechnology” research group (Prof. Dr. Sergey B. Zotchev) within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences has a vacancy for a University Assistent praedoc (PhD) to investigate bacteria isolated from various environmental sources for their ability to biosynthesize novel natural products. Eventually discovered new natural products can serve as candidates for drug development aimed at fighting a variety of human diseases, including microbial infections and cancer. Our research includes advanced approaches of “genome mining” that reveal true biosynthetic potential of bacteria that otherwise is not manifested in the laboratory conditions.The PhD candidate will use genetic manipulation of selected bacteria, including heterologous expression and engineering (using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system) of natural product biosynthesis genes in specially designed hosts. The recombinant bacteria will be analyzed for production of novel natural products, which will be then purified and subjected to structural and biological characterization.The employment duration is initially limited to 1,5 years but will be automatically extendet to 4 years unless the employer terminates it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension. Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade. The basic salary of € 3.578,80 (on a full-time basic) increases if we can credit professional experience.

Your future tasks:We expect that a successful candidate will actively engage in research and teaching and provide support in administration affairs, which means:
  • Conducting research projects in the field of microbial biotechnology.
  • Generating recombinant bacteria.
  • Testing the recombinant bacteria for the production of new natural products.
  • Data analysis.
  • Contributing to collaborative projects.
  • Contributing to writing publications and grants.

We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within the first year of employment.This is part of your personality:

  • You have an above average Master’s degree or similar in microbiology, molecular genetics, pharmaceutical sciences, biochemistry or a similar field.
  • You have a profound interest in microbial biotechnology and natural products.
  • You are open-minded and eager to learn.
  • You are goal-oriented and have a high motivation to strive for scientific excellence.
  • You have experience in microbiological techniques (is a must).
  • You have a basic knowledge in molecular biology (is a plus).
  • You have experience in molecular cloning (is a plus).
  • You have a very good command of written and spoken English (is a must).
  • You have a good command of written and spoken German (is a must).
