The Faculty of Psychology consists of the Dean’s office and the studies service center, as well as Department of Cognition, Emotion, and Methods in Psychology, Department of Occupational, Economic and Social Psychology, the Department of Applied Psychology: Work, Education and Economy, Department of Developmental and Educational Psychology, the Outpatient Unit for Research, Teaching and Practice. Currently, nearly 3,500 students of Psychology are enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programmes, attending nearly 200 courses per semester, which are taught and supervised by 220 teachers.
Your position is at the Department of Cognition, Emotion, and Methods in Psychology. Here, at the Cognitive Psychology research group, we strive to give you the necessary support and supervision to conclude your PhD thesis successfully.Where to apply WebsiteRequirementsSpecific RequirementsYour personal sphere of influence:We are seeking applicants for a PraeDoc position who have a strong interest in using experimental methods, EEG, and eye-tracking to address open questions in human perception, attention, or bordering areas of psychological functioning (working memory, language, etc.), both in basic and applied research. The ideal candidate will have experience in conducting and analyzing behavioral experiments with human participants, online experiments, statistical analyses, and writing up of scientific manuscripts. Knowledge of methods, such as EEG recording or eye-tracking recording, is a plus. Experience developing and deploying behavioral experiments as web applications is also desirable.Predoc Contract Model 1: The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension. With appropriate work progress, an extension to a total maximum of 4 years is possible.Your future tasks:As a university assistant prae doc, your major task is to conduct research in the topical focus area of the group (e.g., visual attention, eye-tracking, perception) to work toward your doctoral degree. This includes planning, programming, and running of experiments with human participants, as well as analyses and write up of the resulting data. The corresponding manuscripts should be published in ISI listed, peer-reviewed journals, so as to allow a cumulative dissertation based on at least three manuscripts, at least one of which needs to be accepted for publication at the time of the submission of your PhD thesis for independent and external review.You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:You are involved in research projects and scientific studies in the area of perception and maybe bordering areas (memory, language, etc.).This may include recording of electroencephalographic (EEG) data and eye-tracking data.This requires programming of experiments with human participants, typically in computer-based experiments in a laboratory, but maybe also in online experiments.You need to analyse empirical data from your and maybe other experiments and studies, potentially including EEG and eye-tracking data.We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.You work on your dissertation and its completion.You should sign up in our Vienna Doctoral School in Cognition, Behavior and Neuroscience (VDS CoBeNe; ) and are expected to fulfil your duties in the course of participating in this doctoral school, such as organizing (or helping to organize) regular meetings with your thesis advisory committee, provide annual written reports on the progress of your dissertation in time, etc.You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching, and administration.This is part of your personality:Candidates should are expected to hold a very good university degree in psychology. Strong computational skills are required, e.g., Python (numpy, pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch), R (Tidyverse), Julia, JavaScript/HTML/CSS, Docker, GNU/Linux, SQL, JASP, LaTeX, and Nipype/Nilearn (FSL, SPM, Freesurfer). Being able to communicate fluently in English and German is a must. EEG and eye-tracking expertise would be nice to have.

  • Completed Master’s degree or Diploma, in Psychology, Biology, Computer Sciences, or Linguistics Basic experience in academic writing and with research methods (e.g. statistical analyses with R, EEG)
  • Didactic competences / experience with e-learning
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level)
  • IT user skills: e.g. Python, LaTeX, JavaScript, JASP, MS office, etc.
  • Desirable knowledge is in the areas of perception, memory, or language
  • You should be a team player with high social and excellent communication skills

  • Interest in pursuing education in emerging research fields
