We offer a position as university assistant (prae-doc) limited to expected 4 years for 30 hours. Expected start: July 2024.We are searching a talented PhD candidate to help us build an expand Human-Computer Interaction research at TU Wien. TU Wien is expanding its HCI research group with the goal of delivering more world-class research into the future relationship between humans and technology.The primary aim of the role is centered on innovating data representation within XR and VR environments for physically active users. Recognizing that a significant portion of Europe’s populace engages in physical activities, the emphasis in technological advancement is now shifting. The goal is no longer solely to encourage activity, but to enhance the user experience in physical activities through immersive and interactive data visualization within XR and VR platforms. This project aims to leverage these technologies to assist users in visualizing and understanding their progress and performance in sports. It involves creating systems that not only foster skill development but also seamlessly integrate physical activities into social interactions. This integration will be achieved through innovative data presentation methods that encourage reflection and broader participation.Tasks:

  • The PhD candidate will explore groundbreaking opportunities in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) specific to sports and wellbeing, with a strong focus on developing interfaces in XR and VR environments. This research is inherently transdisciplinary and calls for a keen interest in both the technical aspects of interface creation in immersive environments and conducting comprehensive user studies to understand the impact of these technologies on physical wellbeing and sports proficiency
  • As a PhD student, you undertake the journey of becoming an expert in the field of HCI and a potential career academic. Typically, this means carrying out high-quality research, writing academic articles, and taking courses to complement your background.
  • Additionally, you will spend one hour per week during term time on teaching duties, such as helping as teaching assistant in courses offered by the University

Your profile:

  • Completed master studies in computer science or equivalent university
  • Interest and previous knowledge in the field of HCI for sports and/or personal informatics
  • Excellent programming and empirical study design skills
  • Curiosity, independent working style and problem-solving skills
  • Readiness to pursue an excellent PhD
  • The position requires excellent sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Teaching in German and English is expected.
