Living Conditions

Gabon is an upper-middle-income country, with comfortable living conditions for expatriate workers. The 2017 SDGs and Scorecards report, produced by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and Bertelsmann Stiftung, assessed Gabon as the leading country in sub-Saharan Africa in terms of progress towards achieving the SDGs. Living conditions in Gabon contrast with the living conditions of the population. Unemployment, particularly among young people, remains high, and the cost of living is high compared with other countries in the sub-region. Food imports cover most of the needs of the inhabitants of the major cities. The UN Volunteer will be based in Libreville, where he or she will be able to move around freely. Food and non-food products are available. Medical facilities are available, although quality is not always guaranteed. Accommodation is quite expensive and is subject to prior approval by the Security Department.
