The department of Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) pursues detailed knowledge of the natural world, effective management of natural resources, novel technologies and medical techniques. YOUR OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Manager, Operations and Finance, the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory Manager is an integral part of the Department of Biological Sciences staff complement. With full managerial authority over the department’s Teaching Laboratories, and teaching operations inside of Wash Sterilization and Greenhouse facilities, the incumbent will contribute significantly to operations, advancing strategic initiatives, as well as ensuring high quality undergraduate student learning and experience. 

Proactive, informed, and collaborative decision making, as it pertains to undergraduate laboratory delivery, is essential in this position. Success in this role will be achieved through thoughtful management of laboratory staff, careful planning and prudent management of financial resources, intelligent laboratory space design and allocation, strict adherence to environmental health and safety policies, and staying current on best practices in laboratory teaching, as well as University of Toronto policies, procedures, academic services and programming.

With a high level of autonomy, the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory Manager exercises a high degree of creativity, judgment, and initiative in creating strategies and solutions in their required duties, especially in the management of unionized staff, development and planning of annual budgets, as well as researching and purchasing laboratory supplies and equipment. 

The Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory Manager will engage in the pursuit of inclusive excellence in teaching by identifying opportunities for curriculum renewal, improving the “student experience” within the undergraduate Biology labs, and highlighting efficiencies for effective use of resources.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

I. EDUCATION:

  • B.Sc. in Biology with some course work in Chemistry or equivalent combination of education and experience.

II. EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience in a teaching laboratory setting, at the post-secondary level.
  • A thorough knowledge of biology and general chemistry at the undergraduate level is required, as is laboratory experience.
  • Experience coordinating lectures/laboratories at the post-secondary level and use of course management software (e.g., Quercus).
  • Experience managing in a unionized environment.
  • A good working knowledge of financial management, human resources and environmental health and safety policies and procedures is a requirement of this position.

III. SKILLS:

  • Must have excellent analytical skills (an aptitude for figures); excellent computer skills, including Excel, Word, e-mail, internet, and web maintenance skills.
  • Must be able to operate the following equipment: microscopes (dissecting, compound light, fluorescence, inverted); centrifuges; balances (top-loading and analytical); pH meters; electrophoresis apparatus; conductivity meters; spectrophotometers; microplate readers, q-PCR and PCR machines, imaging equipment.

IV. OTHER:

  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) and organizational.
  • Excellent decision-making and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to organize, coordinate and effectively communicate activities as they relate to students and faculty.
  • Experience in laboratory management.
  • Qualification as a First Aid responder is an asset.
  • Must have WHMIS & Chemical Safety training and Biosafety Training or be willing to be trained.
