If you’re currently in your third year of a Bachelor of Nursing program and have a passion for emergency or critical care, we encourage you to consider applying for the nursing Student Transition and Extended Exposure Placement (STEEP) Program! The STEEP program is designed in an internship-like model to provide stable and supported clinical transitions for nursing students who are interested in developing deeper nursing knowledge, skills, and expertise in high-intensity areas like the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. Following your Post-Secondary Institution’s regular academic schedule, you will enter the program as an Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) at the end of your third year, you will have the opportunity to complete all remaining fourth year leadership and clinical courses, including the final preceptorship, within this same clinical area. Please note, Leadership courses may be completed outside of home unit depending on current unit circumstances. Upon the successful completion of your nursing program, you will transition into a Graduate Nurse position. Throughout this program, you will be paired with designated Registered Nurse mentors who will provide focused support during the transition to clinical practice. Extended time within this clinical home will enable you to increase your clinical knowledge and skills through repeated exposure and build lasting relationships formed during your UNE experience. Description:

The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.

Required Qualifications:

Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Current enrollment in an approved Baccalaureate Nursing program, entering your 4th year. Meet all clinical requirements set by your Post-Secondary Institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

Current experience in the Emergency Department or ICU.
