This UGN position will work closely with and under the supervision of trained Critical Care RNs, caring for 1 or 2 patients at FMC ICU. Critical Care Nurses work collaboratively with physicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists and social workers in order to achieve the best patient outcomes through a team-based approach. One of the largest and busiest critical care units in Alberta, Foothills Medical Center ICU is the regional tertiary referral center supporting multiple clinical programs including trauma, burns, and neurocritical care for Southern Alberta. This 33+ bed unit is located in a state of the art facility and offers a broad case mix including medical and surgical emergencies, oncology and hematology. Key Responsibilities Include: Provision of direct care for patients & families, under supervision of an ICU RN. Maintenance of electronic and written documentation of care. Maintain professional practice, ongoing professional development, promotion of a positive supportive work environment, and demonstration of professional accountability. Promotion of a healthy, respectful and safe practice environment.

Description:

The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.

Required Qualifications:

Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.

Additional Required Qualifications:

This position includes the following physical requirements: Being on one’s feet for extended periods of time (including walking and standing), exposure to infectious diseases, and hazardous situations for which they are trained. Be able to assist in transporting, lifting, and positioning of patients. Be able to lift, push, and pull equipment. Experience: Strong physical assessment skills. Demonstrated excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills. A positive and enthusiastic attitude is required, as is a willingness to actively tackle new challenges and be able to effectively communicate in a professional, caring and compassionate manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with patient and family centered care and collaborative practice is a strong asset.
