Your Opportunity:

Unit 2 at the Alberta Children’s Hospital is a 26-bed combined medical/surgical unit. We have 8 hour and 12 hours shifts and a RN/ LPN staff mix of approximately 70% RN and 30% LPN. We care for patients who have conditions pertaining to 3 primary areas: cardiac, respiratory, and infant GI surgery. We are a high intensity and fast paced unit with a patient population that have very complex medical conditions. Our patients typically have multiple organ systems involved, are primarily under 2 years of age, and have very long hospital admissions with frequent re-admissions. Many of our patients require higher technology to support their care which may include a tracheostomy, +/- a ventilator, CPAP/ BiPAP machines, NP tubes, chest tubes, high flow oxygen therapy, and cardiorespiratory monitoring. The majority of patients have Central Venous Catheters, PICC lines, TPN, and a variety of tubes: gastrostomy, nasogastric, nasojejuenal, gastrojejuenal. Colostomies, ileostomies, and VAC wound dressings are also common.

An Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for a UNE to develop further competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The nursing activities performed and level of supervision required is determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by professional associations, AHS and competency of the UNE. You will be guided by your education, experience and demonstrated skill level to play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work under time constraints in a fast past environment. Demonstrated Critical thinking and decision-making skills. Current N95 Fit testing. Previous experience working with children. All required information including skills, abilities and professional development must be provided in your application/resume.

Preferred Qualifications:

Connect Care-Nurse Adult and Pediatric Medical Surgical Completion. Clinical practice in an acute pediatric inpatient setting. Active PEARS or PALS certification as asset.
