The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) casual position provides an opportunity for a UNE to develop competency in the range and complexity of the RN practice with acute medical patients. The UNE is an unregulated member of the interprofessional health care team who provides Family Centered Care with direct and indirect supervision of an RN. This position is ideal for those who have a passion for providing patient care for women of all ages and in all stages of life located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) one of Alberta’s largest and longest-serving hospitals and have a goal to work eventually as a Registered Nurse. The nursing activities performed and level of supervision required is determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by CRNA, Alberta Health Services and competency of the UNE. The UNE position reports to the Women’s Health Program Patient Care Manager for the Royal Alexandra Hospital, but supervision is provided by the unit manager of the unit where she or he is assigned for the term. In collaboration with the UNE, the RN at the point of care has the responsibility to make a reasonable and prudent patient care assignment. The UNE will be accountable for providing safe patient care in accordance with his / her education preparation and competency. The UNE is responsible for seeking consultation and guidance. The successful candidates will provide coverage shifts on all areas of the Women’s program.
The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.
Required Qualifications:
Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those who have completed the 3rd year of a 4-year nursing education program. Women’s Health experience.
