Posting Summary Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Recreational Therapist for the New Jersey State Prison located in Trenton, New Jersey. The Recreational Therapist provides and/or coordinates therapeutic activity services within the Department of Corrections’ (DOC) Facilities. Demonstrates competence in recognizing the unique needs and behavior of inmates in the context of therapeutics activities.
Provides direct activities therapy services (within areas of competence) to assigned inmates.
  • Participates as an active member of the clinical treatment team with a special emphasis on integrating activity therapy with other modalities.
  • Ensures appropriate documentation in clinical records of the provision of activity therapy to inmates as mandated by Department of Corrections, UCHC and UBHC policy.
  • Provides supervision to milieu staff in the provision of activity therapy, as requested by Clinician Supervisor.
  • Provides guidance and direction in maintenance of therapeutic milieu and provision of appropriate recreational activities as indicated by supervisory observation.
  • Maintains and applies knowledge of trends and developments in the field. Participates in staff educational programs.
  • Assists in the monitoring of the quality of care provided. Participates in other department in Quality Improvement activities.
  • Responsible for the completion of all administrative work concerning assigned caseload, for the completion of specialty areas, statistical data and monthly clinic reports. Maintains appropriate data and statistics.
  • Under the supervision of the Clinician Supervisor, coordinates therapeutic activity services for all assigned units programs.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a therapeutic activity discipline plus one (1) year of experience in the mental health field conducting activity therapy such as art, music or psychodrama therapy.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Registration or certification in a therapeutic activity discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Typing and the ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments. Frequently talks and listens to people and on the telephone. Extended sitting is required. Ability to move from unit to unit within Department of Corrections’ Facilities. Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 10 pounds). Hearing and sight is essential. Ability to speak clearly is required. Frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls. Manual dexterity and mobility for charting. Ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions. May be required to travel within the state.
Special Conditions Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
