Job Description Summary

The Head Coach, Men’s Volleyball is responsible for leading the coaching, management and coordination of the Men’s Volleyball program. The objectives are to provide opportunities for athletically talented volleyball players and develop them to their fullest potential as student-athletes.  This position is responsible for assisting with the development of relationships with men’s volleyball alumni, donors, as well as the men’s volleyball community through community programming.  This position requires that the incumbent have values consistent with the high standards of the Department and the University of British Columbia. In addition, this position will ensure compliance with the spirit and intent of CWUAA/USPORTS rules and regulations.

Organizational Status

Reporting to the Director of Athletics & Recreation, this position will be in support of and act in accordance with the strategic direction and initiatives of the Department, and The University of British Columbia as it relates to personal and professional conduct, fundraising, general promotions, community involvement, budget management and appropriate administrative responsibilities. There is interaction between team members, coaching and Athletic Department staff as well as with the staff of CWUAA/USPORTS member Institutions and game officials. There is also communication with high school and club coaches, recruits and parents as well as possible interaction with CCAA, NCAA, NAIA coaches/athletics departments, Provincial and/or National Sport Organizations. Internally, the coach interacts with a variety of departments, faculties and services including Housing, Student Financial Awards and Assistance, Library, Student Services, Enrolment Services, Student Recruitment and Advising, etc.

Work Performed

• Coaches and manages the Men’s Volleyball program.
• Leads the effective selection, mentorship and evaluation of assistant coaches and other team personnel.
• Develops and executes short and long term plans for recruitment and retention of academically qualified and highly skilled student-athletes to the program.
• Plans and implements student-athlete training and evaluation methods that are current and individualized.
• Develops and delivers an annual performance plan and five (5) year program plan as required.
• In conjunction with the Student-Athlete Success & Compliance Advisor, responsible for orienting student-athletes to the policies and regulations of the University, Department of Athletics and Recreation, Canada West and U SPORTS.
• Develops and leads team fundraising initiatives, inclusive of management the fundraising plan, budgeting, and tracking of goals of the program.
• Develops connections with and providing opportunities for alumni engagement.
• Works with the Director of Athletics and Recreation and other members of the DAE team to support donor and alumni initiatives (e.g., Giving Day, newsletters).
• Works with the Director of Athletics in competition scheduling and program development.
• Prepares and manages all program budgets as directed by the Director of Athletics and Recreation.
• Performs administrative duties in conjunction with the respective Varsity administrative units / areas in regards to travel arrangements, student-athlete financial awards, housing, parking and eligibility requirements.
• Works with the Student-Athlete Success & Compliance Advisor to support student-athletes with maintaining and developing good academic standing and monitors and assists student-athletes with academic progress.
• Works with the Head Athletic Therapist and other identified integrated support team members in the delivery of related sport medicine and science programs.
• Works with the Communication & Marketing Strategist and other members of the communications team in support of content related to earned media, GoHeat.ca and associated social media channels.
• Cooperates with the Director of Athletics and Recreation and the Communication & Marketing Strategist and other members of the marketing and events team in developing materials and supporting initiatives designed to market and promote the program.
• Co-responsible, along with the Head Coach Women’s Volleyball, for the development and delivery of volleyball specific, student-athlete supported community engagement initiatives as required. These could include Jr Heat volleyball programming, high school tournament hosting, performance academies and summer camp programming.
• Attends Department and coaches’ meetings and participates in the management of the Department as required.
• Participates in provincial and national programs and community events is encouraged to enhance coaching advancement as well as the impact of the program.
• Projects a positive image of the student-athletes, program and the Department.
• Performs other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This is a high-profile position with the potential to positively or negatively impact the reputation of the Heat Athletics program, and the University in general. The incumbent must ensure that their conduct always reflects positively on the University of British Columbia and Heat Athletics.
The incumbent must exercise sound judgment based upon a thorough knowledge of procedures, guidelines, regulations and behavioural expectations. Actions and decisions are critical in ensuring the operational and reputational health of the team and the Athletics Department.  Errors in judgment may cause financial hardship, missed opportunities, and/or reputational damage to the Department and the University.  Work is reviewed in terms of fulfillment of mandates and achievement of program goals.

Supervision Received
Reports to the Director of Athletics and Recreation. The Director gives guidance and direction to the position, but the execution of responsibilities is solely that of the incumbent. The incumbent is expected to work independently as well as with other A&R Department staff in a collaborative and professional environment.
Supervision Given
The coach is in charge of, responsible for, and supervises their student-athletes, assistant coaches and student representatives of the Athletics Department who are members of the program at all Canada West / USPORTS athletic events and all team functions, whether hosted by UBC Okanagan, member Institutions or other organizations.
Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in related field (Master’s Degree preferred); equivalency in education, training and experience considered.
• Fully certified NCCP Level III required, Level IV preferred; equivalency in education, training and experience considered.
• Minimum of five years experience coaching men’s volleyball preferably at the college, university or professional level.
• Consideration in lieu of coaching experience may be given for playing participation as a player at the USPORTS, national team or professional levels.
• Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
• Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Must provide a valid and clear Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Must provide confirmation of Safe Sport training via the Coaching Association of Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

• Basic level of First Aid Training and Class 4 BC Driver’s license preferred.
• Proven record of successfully recruiting student-athletes.
• Proven record of strong communication, presentation, organizational, leadership, administrative, budget management and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to establish long-term goals and vision.
• Demonstrated skills/ability in problem solving and exercising good judgment, taking initiative, as well as maintaining tact and composure in a highly competitive environment.
• Familiarity with the local, provincial and national sport-specific associations and communities.
• In-depth knowledge of rules and regulations of the sport.
• Ability to mentor, motivate, and develop the academic and athletic potential of student athletes in the context of competitive sport, while fostering positive work and learning environments.
• Strong working knowledge of MS Office suite an asset.
• Strong working knowledge of video-editing and use of video for competition prep and post-competition review/teaching.
• Ability to demonstrate thorough game planning for opponents based on weekend schedule formats.
• This position requires significant travel as well as working on weekends, holidays and evenings. This is a fast-paced position that works under time constraints to meet competing demands. This is also a high profile position that requires regular liaison with the community.
