Housing Resource Assistant (student job)

Compensation: $11.34 per hour / up to 20 hours per week
Summary.
The Department of Residence Life at UAA is recruiting for immediate openings for the Housing Resource Assistant (HRA) position for the Fall 2022-Spring 2023 academic year. HRAs often serve as the first point of contact for residential students, community members, and all conference guests. HRAs engage students, build community, help solve problems, and provide accurate information about Residence Life services at the Gorsuch Commons Information Desk. In addition, HRAs provide exceptional customer service and have advanced professional communication skills.
The Department of Residence Life supports on-campus housing for 500+ residents and works in partnership with Campus Services and Housing Facilities & Finance. Our program provides leadership training, experiential training, awareness of diverse lifestyles and cultures, co-curricular programs and activities (educational and social), and behavioral accountability. Residence Life’s student development approach focuses on enriching each student’s higher education experiences by delivering high quality, student-centered programs and services.
Responsibilities.
Consistently offer a high level of customer service by answering inquiries via phone, in person, and by email.
Answer students’ questions, manage student housing application information, provide directions, and assist with a variety of tasks related to dining, Event Services, and Housing Facilities and Finance .
Operate office equipment including multi-line phones, copier, fax machine and personal computer.
Have the ability to work independently and as a team, and be self-directed and self-motivated.
Be able to work a flexible schedule from 10-20 hours per week in a fun working environment including some nights and weekends.
Enjoy working in a team to support residential students, Event Services guests, and other Residence Life and Campus Services customers, which may include outreach to students and clients.
Occasionally conduct facilities walk-throughs and report maintenance issues.
Serve as a role model and mentor in conduct, attitude, participation, and academics, both on and off campus; positively represent the Department of Residence Life and the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Report to supervisors any concerning behaviors in support of residents’ wellness.
Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, staff development meetings, and leadership trainings.
Administrative support; including clerical work, special projects.
Customer service and outreach.
Support and abide by the UAA Student Code of Conduct and University regulations.
Work and accurately report hours worked in the Department of Residence Life.
Communicate effectively with both students and supervisor with complete, accurate, and timely information.
Perform other duties as assigned for the Residence Life and Campus Services team.
Academic Eligibility.
To be eligible for this student position, candidates must:
Be admitted and enrolled in a University of Alaska system in a degree-program with a minimum of six (6) credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) credit hours for graduate students during regular semesters of employment; or
For employment between semesters, be admitted in a degree-seeking program, and demonstrate plans to enroll for six (6) or more credit hours for undergraduate students or six (6) or more credit hours for graduate students in the next regular semester; and
Have a minimum 2.50 term and cumulative grade point average (GPA); satisfactory term grade point average (2.50 or above) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or their designee, and maintain successful academic progress.
Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlines above to substantiate employment eligibility.
Be in good disciplinary standing at the time of appointment and must remain in good disciplinary standing throughout the duration of employment. Should the Department of Residence Life student employee be placed on disciplinary probation, the individual will no longer be eligible for employment within the department.
Position reappointment from semester to semester is contingent upon the following: academic eligibility, successful progress toward degree completion, performance evaluation, and judicial standing.
NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities.
Successful applicants will have some experience living in a residential campus community and/or familiarity with student leadership in a university setting. In addition, successful applicants with have some experience with the following:
Familiarity with general office procedures, practices and office equipment.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making in developing new procedures or techniques.
Self-motivation and project-management skills.
Ability to lead peers, collaborate with University and community partners.
Excellent interpersonal and public relation skills to work with staff, faculty, students and the general public via a multi-line telephone system and in person.
Ability to work independently, sometimes with limited supervision.
Ability to meet deadlines and work cooperatively with other departmental and campus staff.
Ability to organize and prioritize fluctuating workloads and perform multiple tasks.
Time management skills to meet the changing demands of the office.
Ability to exercise considerable discretion and confidentiality.
Typical Education or Training.
Demonstrated experience with administrative/office clerical duties.
Previous experience collaborating with University as/or community partners.
Demonstrated leadership and peer helping skills
Position Requirements.
Preferred:
Preference will be given to qualified applicants who also are eligible for Federal Work Study as a form of financial aid. Preference will also be given to applicants with knowledge about UAA and the programs and services available to students, as well as to applicants with the ability to build community and engage students in meaningful discussions.
