Three doctoral students on Edge Computing

Information about the project and the research
The team working on this project, consisting of the PI with three new PhD students, will revolutionize edge computing operating systems and edge software design. The team will work across the entire edge stack, (re-)defining how edge systems are designed, built, and operated. Together, we will start with a clean-slate design to edge systems, with the aim of answering the following four Research Questions:

1. What is the right architecture to build a distributed edge cloud, taking into account the tradeoffs between cost, performance, bandwidth, and energy.
2. How to design adaptive edge applications that can utilize the full potential of the edge infrastructure given the multiple edge constraints.
3. How to manage the workload dynamics of real-time edge cloud applications taking into account mobility, load spikes, failures, and performance inversion.
4. How to manage and process massive data of edge applications in real-time while maintaining the requirements on data privacy and security.

We will produce open-source code for an edge operating system. We will aim to deploy and test some of our designs in real-life systems.

This project is funded with a Future Research Leaders SSF grant. You will work closely with the rest of the team members, and your supervisor Ahmed on some of the hardest (and most fun!) problems today in computer systems. The division of Computer and Network Systems where you will be employed has top-notch faculty and students covering all fields of computer systems. The department of computer science and engineering is one of the best computer science departments in Sweden and Europe.

Major responsibilities

The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers’ undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Mandatory qualifications
Finished or working towards a M.Sc. degree or did a five years program in computer science or any related field.

Meritourious qualifications
Grades are not everything, industrial experience, open-source contributions, and/or other achievements will all be highly valued.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
