Three (3) Tenure Track Positions in Mechatronics Engineering
Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Mechatronics Engineering (MIME) in the Faculty of Engineering & Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University invites applications for the following three positions at the rank of Assistant Professor in Mechatronics Engineering, effective July 1, 2025, subject to final budgetary approval:
Position 1: Automotive Mechatronics
Position 2: AI-Enabled Mechatronics
Position 3: Advanced Mechatronics
The successful candidates will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity, and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Teaching duties will entail teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and graduate levels and supervision of students. Each successful candidate will further pursue a strong, innovative research program or creative activity that is externally funded and that produces cutting-edge, high-quality results.
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical-Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field by the appointment date.
In addition, the successful candidates must present evidence of:
a strong background in theoretical/experimental mechatronics/robotics related to the search areas;
a strong emerging scholarly research and/or creative activity that is current, innovative, and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research-related awards, and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline;
a relevant research area of interest that complements the research of existing Mechatronics Engineering group, including, but not limited to:
(Position 1: Automotive Mechatronics) autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, hardware-software co-design, and advanced control systems design.
(Position 2: AI-Enabled Mechatronics) large language models for human-robot interaction or collaboration and predictive maintenance of mechatronic systems, robot imitation learning, robot learning from demonstrations, robot transfer learning, reinforcement learning of mechatronic systems, Real-to-Sim-to-Real for robotic manipulation, human-centric and human-augmentation robotic systems, interactive and collaborative robotics.
(Position 3: Advanced Mechatronics) advanced control techniques, precision mechatronics, high-performance sensors and smart actuators design, biomechatronics, embedded systems, sensor network, internet of robotic things (IoRT), and design for sustainability, all for mechatronic systems.
potential for teaching excellence in Mechatronics Engineering courses at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and suitability for teaching in the graduate program;
eligibility to register as a professional engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of Ontario;
a commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
service and volunteerism related to research, teaching, and/or EDI, and an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Department, Faculty, and the University through collegial service.
Postdoctoral and/or industrial experience is considered an asset.

Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Mechatronics Engineering
The Department has 40 faculty members and offers four-year accredited programs leading to Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and (from 2027) in Mechatronics Engineering. The Department also offers graduate programs leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, Master of Applied Science (MASc) degree, and Master of Engineering (MEng) degree and is home to about 1300 undergraduate and 100 graduate students.
