Under the direction of the Director of Operations, Performance, and Facilities, the incumbent will provide their technical acumen and will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operational and performance space needs at the Faculty of Music. Duties will include overseeing the day-to-day theatre operations ensuring that a safe working environment is maintained, planning and implementing a season performance schedule, maintaining and repairing theatre equipment, designing and fabricating custom production scenery, editing production documentation, analyzing, and recommending changes to rental fees, and planning and estimating financial resources required for programs and/or projects. In addition you will be responsible for picking up and dropping equipment and supplies to and from the theatre. Lastly, the incumbent will act as back up support for theatre technicians and other department colleagues, as required.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Analyzing processes and recommending changes for more efficient coordination of operations
  • Implementing a rollout plan for the season performance schedule
  • Conducting routine inspections of assigned facilities
  • Implementing production activities according to plans and schedules
  • Analyzing production set drawings
  • Paying close attention to occupational safety precautions
  • Coordinating the production of CAD drawings
  • Planning and estimating financial resources required for programs and/or projects

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in theatre operations required including overseeing day-to-day operational, design and production needs of performance spaces.
  • Experience overseeing all technical aspects of a theatre such as rigging, lighting, audio, video, costuming, scenic painting, and props.
  • Experience analyzing technical operation activities and requirements for a theatre and recommending changes for improvement.
  • Experience analyzing technical specifications (for example, design documents) in preparation for production labour and material cost estimates for theatre projects and or productions.
  • Experience planning and estimating financial resources required for programs and/or projects within a theatre environment.
  • Experience designing and fabricating custom production scenery and analyzing production set drawings.
  • Experience applying established standards when performing maintenance on theatre materials and repairing theatrical equipment.
  • Experience scheduling and assigning work to a small group in a limited area, including short-term contractors within an theatre environment.
  • Experience participating in routine inspections to ensure adherence to occupational safety standards as it pertains to theatre operations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to liaise and work collaboratively with stakeholders and contractors.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the Ontario Health and Safety Act and the regulations and guidelines which pertain to work in the theatre environment.
  • Working-at-heights certification required.
  • Class “G” Driver’s License required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, that includes regular evening and weekend work during peak performance seasons.
  • Ability to lift weight up to 25 kg.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience working in a unionized environment would be an asset.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR Level C an asset.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone: 

USW Pay Band 12 — $78,308 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $100,144. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
