The Habsburg Monarchy from the 16th century is the focus of this tenure-track professorship. With their transnational work, successful applicants will enrich the current research profile of the Faculty, which covers the period from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century. We invite applications from excellent scientists who will break new ground in the study of the Habsburg Monarchy with innovative and source-oriented research in an optimal research environment. The position enables active participation in teaching and in our Doctoral School. Collaboration in the main research areas of the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies, in particular the research area “Austria in its environment”, offers numerous opportunities to fdevelop your own research in an intellectually stimulating network.The faculty covers all historical subjects at the University of Vienna. The departments, working groups and special libraries that exist today are spread across various locations at the University of Vienna. A special feature of all departments is the Institute for Austrian Historical Research, founded in 1854, which was run as a federal organizational unit and was integrated into the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies in 2016. The Institute of Austrian historical research is an internationally recognized research and training center for the methodology and maintenance of auxiliary historical sciences (palaeography, documentation theory, file studies, source studies, etc.) in their cultural-historical context on the one hand and and for research into the history of the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states on the other hand. The history of the Habsburg Monarchy in the early modern period is an essential area of research and has always been dealt with at the highest level of competence, which has also been of great importance for teaching. The members of this institute focus, in their research and teaching, on different times and regions; they are interested in diverging questions and problems and therefore represent different theoretical, conceptual and methodological approaches to historical science.Your academic profile:

  • Doctoral degree/PhD
  • Two years of international research experience during or after doctoral studies
  • Outstanding research achievements, excellent publication and funding record, international reputation
  • Gender and diversity competence
  • Experience in designing of and participating in research projects, ability to lead research groups and acquire third-party funding
  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching and supervision at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level

We expect the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor’s programmes and for participation in university committees.We offer:
