Tenure Track Position – Department of Biology – Faculty of Science

The Department of Biology at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in Environmental Microbiology (broadly defined) using Metagenomics. The successful individual will teach core undergraduate courses in Microbiology, as well as elective(s) in their area of expertise and interest. The new professor also will apply for research grants and will contribute their expertise to mentoring and supervising undergraduate and graduate research students.

This appointment is expected to start on August 1, 2024 (negotiable) subject to final budgetary approval. The salary will be commensurate with credentials and experience. Full-time, permanent faculty members receive a comprehensive fringe benefit package including group life, accidental death and dismemberment, supplemental health, travel insurance, pension, and long-term disability insurance.

UPEI is a small, dynamic university with a strong commitment to teaching and research excellence. The Biology Department (http://www.upei.ca/programsandcourses/biology) consists of thirteen professors, seven technical staff, and is the largest department in the Faculty of Science with approximately 650 undergraduate students and 25 graduate students. Our graduate students and faculty research interests are in the broad areas of cancer and stem cell biology, watershed and coastal habitat ecology, ecology of change, animal habitat fragmentation, heart and stroke physiology, conservation physiology, aquatic toxicology, developmental plant biology, as well as population genetics and evolution, among others.

The University is located on Epekwitk, part of the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaw nation. The main campus is in the provincial capital of Charlottetown, a bustling tourist destination that boasts the amenities of a much larger city, including excellent theatre, galleries, music, and dining possibilities (https://www.charlottetown.ca/). A province-wide hiking and biking trail runs right along the UPEI campus, and the National Park beaches and world-famous golf courses are a short drive away (https://www.tourismpei.com/). Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a related field of biological sciences and have relevant postdoctoral experience. Applicants must also be committed to excellence in teaching, with university teaching experience being a strong asset, and should have potential for developing a strong externally funded research program, demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
