| Position Summary | The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, College of Science and Health, Department of Physics, invites applicants for a full-time academic year tenure-track Assistant Professor in medical physics, experimental biophysics, or biomedical engineering (all fields broadly defined) to start on August 28, 2023. The Department is seeking a colleague with expertise in medical physics, experimental biomedical physics, or biomedical engineering (all fields broadly defined) to complement a thriving undergraduate research program in the areas of quantum optics, surface physics, nuclear physics, biomechanics, and observational astronomy, as well theoretical research in astrophysics and low-temperature quantum mechanics. | Description of College / Department / Program / Division / Unit | The Department has seven full-time faculty and offers a B.S. in Physics with the options of Emphases in Applied Physics, Astronomy, Computational Physics, and Optics. Students may also choose to complete a Physics Major with concentration in Business, Biomedical, or Science Education areas. The Department is active in undergraduate research and has a Dual-Degree Program (Physics & Engineering) in cooperation with six Engineering programs including UW-Madison and the University of Minnesota Duluth. UWL prides itself in supporting undergraduate research and has established a variety of experimental techniques for users to access. Teaching and research opportunities in medical physics/biomedical engineering exist in the Nuclear Science Laboratory (Physics) and the Radiation Center (Interdisciplinary). These spaces are licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the handling of radioactive material. Please contact slesher@uwlax.edu for an equipment list. Users also have access to equipment in the Health Science center including GE ultrasound and x-ray imaging equipment. Highlighted equipment for biophysics/biomedical engineering includes a Ziess Evo HD scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy and elemental mapping capabilities, a Nikon Eclipse Ti inverted microscope, a Nikon C1 confocal microscope, a Carry 5000 UV-Vis system, a Malvern Zetasizer Nano, Agilent 5420 and 5500 scanning probe microscopes, a Thermo Fischer iS50R FT-IR, and Jasco J-1500 CD Spectrometer. There are multiple research centers nearby for collaborations including Mayo Clinic Health Systems (La Crosse), Gundersen Health System (La Crosse), Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, 75 miles), and Univ. of WI Medical Physics (Madison, 140 miles). |
