Brief Position Overview The Department of Education at Montana State University (MSU) invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor in Special Education. We seek a qualified individual to provide undergraduate and graduate level instruction in Special Education and whose expertise and substantive research interests include the intersection of general education and special education. The selected candidate should have a well-articulated faculty agenda that includes a commitment to scholarly productivity and experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, including working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Position Details

General Statement The College of Education, Health and Human Development is conducting an open rank search for a faculty member with expertise in Special Education and Human Exceptionality. The faculty member will contribute broadly to the preparation of P-12 teacher candidates and professionals who will work with individuals with diverse needs. This faculty position, a nine-month, tenure track appointment with potential for summer employment, begins August 15, 2023. An instructional position located in the Department of Education, this tenure-track faculty line involves 50% teaching, 40% research, and 10% service.
We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in special education and teacher education;
  • Provide mentorship and field supervision to students in community–based and public school placements;
  • Conduct innovative research in a specialized area of interest in special education and/or human exceptionality;
  • Participate in outreach and service activities to the university and citizens of Montana.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Doctoral degree in special education, curriculum and instruction, teaching and learning, or closely related field, and a graduate degree in special education or equivalent field. ABD candidates considered if they complete their degree requirements by August 2023.
  • Experience preparing teachers.
  • Demonstrated potential for successful teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with diverse faculty, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated potential for scholarly productivity that contributes to the field of special education and/or teacher preparation.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Recent experience working with P-12 students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse support needs.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-sector education stakeholders (such as practitioners and researchers.)
  • Earned special education teaching credential.
