| Position Description & Qualifications | Job category: Junior faculty/Tenure-track AOS: Open AOC: Open Workload: Full time Start date: September 1, 2023 Job Description The German Studies department at Lawrence University of Wisconsin, a liberal arts college and conservatory of music in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning academic year 2023-2024 (https://www.lawrence.edu/academics/college/german ). The German Studies department offers major/minor tracks within a robust German cultural studies program. From the beginning language sequence to the senior capstone course, our highly motivated and intellectually curious students encounter a curriculum that develops not only their linguistic proficiency, but also the skills of interdisciplinary critical analysis within German Studies broadly defined. All of our courses draw from diverse intellectual traditions and theoretical approaches allowing students to situate their learning within a multicultural and global liberal arts context. Applicants to the position should demonstrate the ability to work effectively across Lawrence’s German Studies curriculum, which has a strong critical cultural studies focus. Areas of expertise are open, but candidates are expected to have a commitment to inclusion and interdisciplinarity in teaching and scholarship. Current areas of particular need include the long 19th century through a global perspective (e.g. colonialism, nationalism, racialization), Austrian Studies, GDR literature and culture, Jewish Studies, migration, and music. Ability to contribute to an interdisciplinary area such as Lawrence’s Global Studies or Ethnic Studies is desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with undergraduates in a liberal arts setting and to contribute to our First Year Studies program (https://www.lawrence.edu/academics/academic-experience/first-year-studies ), which introduces an interdisciplinary orientation to the liberal arts and is designed to cultivate new students’ skills as readers, writers, and thinkers. Duties include teaching 6 courses on a 10-week term system (2 classes each term), a research program, undergraduate academic advising, departmental and university service, and activities that contribute to diversity and anti-racism. Ph.D. in German Studies or a related field by the time of appointment preferred, however, ABD candidates will receive full consideration. Native or near-native proficiency in the German language required. Lawrence is committed to enhancing the diversity of its faculty and staff.
