Location – This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

The Counselling Psychology program at the University of Alberta involves participating in a very dynamic and active psychological clinic. Our clinic serves the greater Edmonton and surrounding communities, and helps expose students to supervised clinical work, assessment, research, and training.

The CP doctoral program has been accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association since 2000. The mission of the program is to provide students with theoretical foundations, research, and professional training from a scientist-practitioner model in preparation for a career involving research and/or professional psychological practice with adults and families in a variety of settings. Students in the program study full-time and many go on to receive Tri-Council funding and other prestigious awards. Importantly, 100% of graduates become employed in their disciplines after graduation, working in hospitals, universities, schools, and private practice all over Canada.

Position Description

The Faculty of Education, Counselling Psychology area at the University of Alberta, invites applications for one tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Counselling Psychology (CP), with demonstrated expertise in the practice and ethics of psychological assessment. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong record of clinical supervision and work with equity-denied communities.

Successful candidates must demonstrate research and/or practical expertise in psychological assessment across the lifespan. Applicants must be able to practice, teach, and supervise psychological assessment to every level of graduate student trainee (masters and doctoral).

Responsibilities

Teaching (40%). The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in psychological assessment (e.g., EDPY 521, 539, 697). The typical course load is 2 courses in Fall and 2 courses in Winter. The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise graduate students and involve students in their program of research. The successful applicant will need to be eligible for registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) as registration is needed to teach practicum-based courses in the Counselling Psychology program. Applicants who are graduates of a(n) CPA or APA accredited program are especially encouraged to apply.

Research and Scholarship (40%). The incumbent will be expected to initiate and maintain a program of funded research, publish research in peer-reviewed journals and other relevant sources, present at conferences, and otherwise contribute to the creation and dissemination of new knowledge in the identified field(s) of expertise and engagement. The College’s Office of Research provides various supports for faculty researchers.

Service (20%). The candidate will be expected to contribute to the Counselling Psychology program, faculty, institution, and psychology profession. Expectations of service load will increase as the candidate becomes better established.

Minimum Qualifications

• Applicants must have earned a doctorate in Counselling Psychology or Clinical Psychology from a major research university by July 1, 2026.
• Applicants must be registered or eligible for registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists.
• Demonstrated expertise in the practice of psychological assessment.
• Must be able to practice, teach, and supervise psychological assessment to every level of graduate student trainee (masters and doctoral).

The following are considered an asset:

• Experience conducting assessment with diverse populations.
• Strong record of clinical supervision and work with equity-denied communities.
