Temporary Lecturer Position-Physics Department, Cornell University
The Cornell University Department of Physics has 40 active faculty and approximately 170 graduate students and 60 undergraduate majors. We offer a full range of university-level courses in physics, from general education courses for nonscientists to doctoral-level independent research. Approximately 2000 students from across the University take physics courses each semester.
The Department is seeking an experienced Lecturer to teach PHYS 4500 – Cultivating Public Engagement in Physics and PHYS 4484 – Teaching and Learning Physics during the spring 2023 semester. PHYS 4500 – Cultivating Public Engagement in Physics is a two-credit course that centers on the design, production, and use of exhibits in both informal and formal science education settings, to increase engagement in and understanding of physics. Students are expected to deliver tangible deliverables that include a physical artifact–the exhibit itself, a showcase event, and a video that clearly articulates the physics concepts elucidated by the exhibit, much of the course will be very hands-on and participants will learn to safely use a variety of tools to construct their exhibits. The successful candidate should possess experience in public physics outreach and is expected to guide students through the building and engagement process. PHYS 4484 – Teaching and Learning Physics is a one-credit course that provides undergraduate and graduate students with an introduction to core concepts in teaching and learning physics. The successful candidate should have experience leading potential instructors and have a strong foundation in physics educational and instructional concepts. Experience teaching these courses or similar courses is desired.
This is a 5-month, 80%FTE, non-renewable, academic appointment beginning in January 2023.
The successful candidate will have:
• An advanced degree (Master’s Degree) in physics or physics education.
• At least two years of experience teaching college-level physics with a public outreach and community partnership component.
• Knowledge of effective instructional pedagogies and learning strategies.
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting the academic achievement of students.
• Excellent planning, organization, and coordination skills.
• Ability and willingness to work and teach collaboratively.
• Initiative and interest in fostering an inclusive work environment.
