Statement of the Job:

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s part-time 4-H Community Education Assistant (CL3) will provide educational programming through 4-H Youth Development in the greater Portland area. 4-H is a non-formal, experiential education program for youth, and adults working with those youth, to develop life skills necessary to be self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. A priority will be to strengthen 4-H clubs for teens in the Greater Portland area in partnership with organizations including Portland Housing Authority, local schools, non-profits, and other community-based groups. Position will be based out of the UMaine Extension Cumberland County office in Falmouth, Maine, but conducting programs throughout the Greater Portland area at / with local schools, non-profits, and other community-based groups. Temporary through August 31, 2024, full-time, 40 hours per week, 5 days per week. Daily work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This temporary position pays $19.59/hour.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Select, prepare, deliver, and evaluate ten weekly learning activities with a STEM focus at three Portland sites from March – early June.
• Mentor Deering High School 4-H club members during weekly 4-H meetings, including any extracurricular activities they plan.
• Attend and contribute to appropriate working groups, which would include CYFAR, Summer of Science, and Cumberland County 4-H staff meetings.
• Visit each Summer of Science community partner (6-8 partners) prior to Summer of Science with college intern(s).
• Recruit, hire, onboard, administer, and evaluate 12 teens to be Teen Teachers for the 2024 Summer of Science in Cumberland County.
• Supervise three college students from late May through early August in their role as Summer of Science interns. Support includes meeting weekly with interns and other 4-H staff, visiting and monitoring teaching sites, regular communications with community partners, delivering materials as needed, monitoring collection of participation data, and other duties as needed.
• Plan and deliver a celebration and awards ceremony for Teen Teachers and Interns the first week of August.
• Compile data from Summer of Science including Project Records, intern and teen feedback, demographics, partner evaluations, and any other data collection source.
• Organize materials and supplies from Summer of Science and manage interns in August to inventory their leftover materials.
• Seek ways to reach under-served and under-represented youth while ensuring compliance with affirmative action, equal opportunity and civil rights guidelines.
• Monitor spending to support educational programs in 4-H youth development.
• Use educational technology to enhance program expansion and reach new audiences.
• Develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, honesty, purposeful work and mutual respect.
• Utilize coaching and mentoring methods that provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance.
• Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

• A high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and approximately four years of related work experience.
• Experience working with youth.
• Experience working with diverse audiences and supporting equal opportunity, affirmative action, and civil rights goals.
• Demonstrated skill in designing and delivering community-based educational programs with an emphasis on youth development.
• Demonstrated management and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated facilitation skills, which includes the ability to handle conflict.
• Demonstrated experience in prioritizing and managing logistics of activities and workshops.
• Collaborative work skills with other agencies and organizations.
• Demonstrated effective communication using oral, written and electronic methods.
• Demonstrated experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Ability to travel in state, usually requiring a valid driver’s license.
• Independent as well as teamwork skills; must be self-motivated and directed with the ability to achieve measurable results and manage multiple tasks in an autonomous work environment.
• Work schedule flexibility depending upon the needs of clients.

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development, Education or related field.
• Experience with informal science, technology, engineering, and/or math education for youth.
• Ability to occasionally lift 30 to 50 pounds.
