Technician III
Weill Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology

The Lammerding laboratory in the Weill Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology and Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering (https://lammerding.wicmb.cornell.edu/ ) is seeking a Technician to support their efforts to maintain a mouse colony for performing muscle research. The Lammerding laboratory investigates the cellular mechanisms of degenerative skeletal and cardiac muscle diseases using mouse model systems in a dynamic, team-based collaborative research environment. We are interested in hiring a proactive and dedicated individual who can learn and support the following essential research activities:

  • Maintaining a complex mouse colony through genotyping, breeding, and contributing to organization of shared lab databases.

  • Performing routine mouse experimental procedures, such as functional assays, tissue collection, cell isolation and immunohistology.

  • Supporting more complicated mouse experimental procedures with other lab personnel.

This position is expected to be part-time, benefits eligible, 20-30 hours per week depending on candidate availability. The successful candidate would work closely with other laboratory personnel and Cornell’s CARE veterinary support staff to actively maintain a large (~150 cage) mouse colony:

  • Work would mainly involve genotyping of mice from tail or ear specimens by PCR and gel electrophoresis assays.

  • If the successful candidate is available to work close to 30 hours/week, they would also be responsible for mouse colony daily maintenance and organization with appropriate safety and ethical procedures.

There is the possibility of a full-time schedule in the future, depending on workload and candidate eligibility.

Interested candidates who would prefer an assignment of fewer than 20 hours per week (not benefits-eligible) will also be considered.  If this is your preference, please specify this in your cover letter.

This position is a one-year term position, renewable depending on successful performance of the required responsibilities and renewal of the funding support.  It is supported by grant funding from the National Institutes of Health and private foundations. The position does not require after-hours or weekend work routinely but may necessitate it occasionally. Most of the work should be conducted in normal business hours, but the supervisors are amenable to a flexible schedule as long as it accommodates other laboratory personnel that will be working with the Technician.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree in bioengineering, biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, veterinary sciences or related disciplines.

  • 1-2 years of experience in biology, biotechnology, veterinary or related research.

  • Familiarity with mouse genotyping.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

  • A successful candidate will be highly motivated to work in a dynamic team-based research setting and be enthusiastic to communicate within the team, and therefore will value working relationships with a large variety of team members.

  • A strong interest in contributing to muscle bioengineering research in a multi-disciplinary team setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in bioengineering, biology, biochemistry, veterinary sciences, or related disciplines.

  • 2-4 years of research experience with mice, including hands-on mouse procedural experience and colony maintenance.

  • Familiarity with basic aspects of biological data analysis and experimental design.

  • Ability to multi-task in an experimental setting.

For full consideration, please attach both a resume and cover letter to your application.

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
