TECHNICIAN B, EHS,Environment, Health and Safety Office (EHS)-Industrial Hygiene Program-Asbestos Program, Routine duties include collecting samples from building materials; preparing and arranging for carrier pickup of samples; filling out chain-of-custody paperwork to ensure proper tracking of samples; calibrating air pumps for the purposes of air sample collection and conducting post-monitoring check of pumps to ensure flow rates are within specification; performing area air samples; implementing EHS hazardous waste program elements; arranging meetings with MIT personnel to review work scope and develop material sampling strategy; arranging for MIT personnel to gain access to spaces to perform area air sampling; collecting bulk samples of potentially asbestos-containing materials; logging information, including results of third-party testing analysis, into relevant computer database(s); writing reports indicating the scope of surveys and results of testing; monitoring compliance with the disposal of asbestos-containing materials, tracking paperwork, and contacting vendors and disposal facilities to ensure MIT obligations are met; and generally assisting the Asbestos Program with record-keeping responsibilities and day-to-day operations.  May deliver asbestos awareness training to MIT staff and perform other EHS responsibilities as time allows.  


Job Requirements

REQUIRED:  high school diploma; graduation from a two-year technical day school; good customer service and communication skills in a service-oriented EHS environment; basic computer skills; and ability to work with minimal supervision.  Will be required to obtain an asbestos inspector’s license within six months of employment and to carry out requirements to maintain certification, such as the completion of annual refresher training.  Job #21967

Working conditions: use of ladders; entry into usual and potentially dirty/dusty spaces (e.g., attics, tunnels, utility chases, etc.); collecting samples using tools to break off or extract pieces suitable for analysis; and lifting/moving weights of at least 50 lbs.

Must be able to meet the requirements of MIT’s Respiratory Protection Program , including passing a medical examination to determine fitness to wear a respirator.

Due to increased regulatory requirements for security of certain hazardous material, successful candidate must pass a background check.
