The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is seeking to appoint an Electrical/Instrumental Technician to provide specialist technical services to academic staff, research staff and students to support research and teaching projects. In doing this, the successful candidate will work on some of the most innovative and emerging research theory and it will be the potholders grounded principles formulated through their hands on engineering experience within automated control systems and electrical control systems that will bring life to these projects. 

One of the upcoming group projects for this academic year is the Formula Student which will provide an exciting opportunity for the postholder to support students with their design and manufacture of the school’s electric Formula Student vehicle. The postholder will also be involved in the electrical support for our project teams design, build and flying of model aircraft (up to competition level).

Working as part of a 5 strong technical team, the Technician will deliver specialist technical support for world leading research and development in subject areas such as bioengineering, clean energies, composite materials and structures. They will also have responsibilities for ensuring the monthly maintenance schedule is adhered to, for fault-finding and for repairing equipment.

Some areas of the role may be highly specialised and full training will be provided where required, such as the use of special materials testing equipment.

This post is available on a fixed term contract for 1 year. Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.

The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate you have:   

  • An OND/ONC and/or NVQ level 3 or above (or equivalent standard) in an engineering discipline e.g. Electrical or Electronic engineering and/or a recognised apprenticeship completed in an engineering environment.
  • Three years’ recent relevant post qualification/apprenticeship experience with either industrial automated control systems or instrumentation equipment used for data logging and measurement processes.
