THE ROLE

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is seeking an experienced and service focused Technical Assistant to join our newly established Australian Genome Foundry . In this newly created and varied role, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to provide support for biofoundry activities across the full research and service delivery lifecycles to ensure its smooth running and operation.

Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer, you will:

  • Provide technical and operational support to the biofoundry across the full research and service delivery lifecycles

  • Assist in the demonstration of experiments and/or equipment

  • Maintain equipment and procure consumables required for the conduct of experiments

  • Contribute to the capture and update bio-foundry asset records on University systems

  • Assist in the development, implementation, maintenance, and review of WHS in laboratories, ensuring safe work protocols and documentation are maintained

  • Contribute to the development of, and conduct training, inductions and orientations for the laboratory and its equipment

About Us

Located at Macquarie University and within the Faculty of Science and Engineering , the Australian Genome Foundry is a high-throughput strain engineering facility with a highly automated workflow. This means rather than having a researcher building one strain at a time manually, the same researcher could build hundreds or thousands of strains in parallel using robotic platforms. The Australian Genome Foundry is capable of synthesizing complete eukaryotic chromosomes and consists of modular robotic platforms capable of automated construction and analysis of synthetic microbial strains.

Salary Package: Level 4 from $70,536 to $76,022 p.a., plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading. Pro rata for part-time

Appointment Type: Full-time or Part-time (0.6 FTE), fixed term for 12 months

Essential:

  • Certificate IV, Diploma or similar qualification and work-related experience or equivalent relevant education, training and/or experience. A degree is preferred.    

  • Experience delivering technical support to clients and/or stakeholders in a laboratory environment

  • Aptitude and desire to learn new skills

  • Knowledge and skills in basic laboratory research

  • Professional presentation and strong interpersonal skills

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills including successfully planning, prioritisation, initiating action and follow up

  • Demonstrated ability to trouble-shooting issues with equipment

  • Experience working in a team-based environment with the ability to relate to and engage with other staff.

Desirable:

  • Specialist knowledge or experience in synthetic biology or working in a foundry environment
