The Technical Lead – Exercise Sports Science and Exercise Physiology will manage and provide support to the Sport Health and Physical Education (SHAPE) programs within the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work, and Exercise Physiology courses within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
Key Position Responsibilities

Provide management and support to the University’s Sturt Gym and surrounding areas in order to provide support to the Sport Health and Physical Education (SHAPE) programs within the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work, and Exercise Science, Clinical Exercise Physiology courses within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Manage the purchase of replacement and new components and equipment within a prescribed budget.

Identify opportunities to improve the processes and services in order to ensure ongoing satisfaction of students and academics. In this regard, liaise regularly with academic staff to pro-actively review work practices and plan for future requirements as they apply to the Sturt Gym and other sporting facilities.

Analyse data, produce quality reports and presentations and review technical agreements and contracts and make recommendations to the Director of College Services as required.

Provide line management supervision of a small team and operate with minimal supervision.

Liaise with Academic staff on a regular and proactive basis to understand the changing needs in teaching and research and ensure plans for equipment, staffing and support are fit for purpose and suit the needs of the stakeholders.

Coordinate the use of gym and exercise physiology equipment including: Providing orientation to all new staff /students on the use of the Gym and Exercise Science laboratories; Organising equipment for staff and students use when required; Providing a safe and professional gym/lab space and safe operating environment, by undertaking regular cleaning/organisation and ensuring appropriate storage of equipment; Researching and ordering consumables/equipment needed for teaching and research including general gym consumables and technical equipment; and ensuring that maintenance requirements of the gym/lab and its equipment are followed and documented in accordance with relevant University policies and where needed for repairs/servicing is organised;

Managing bookings from other internal and external clients who may use the gym, ensuring that clients are advised appropriately with regard to procedures for the safe and efficient use of the facility.

Provide technical support to teaching and research staff in the area of physical education, exercise science/clinical exercise physiology including:

Providing support for exercise science/clinical exercise physiology research testing;

Demonstrating procedures and techniques as required and providing one-on-one and group training on the use of the gym and laboratory equipment (e.g. metabolic cart);

Provision of exercise science/clinical physiology laboratory orientation;

Undertake a range of responsibilities to support the requirements of the sporting/exercise science facilities, including coordinating audio visual and other equipment for workshops, practicals and lectures, and ensuring equipment is in optimal functioning capacity.

Ensure Work Health and Saftety policies and procedures are adhered to, through the creation and maintenance of risk assessments, standard operating procedures and training manuals, effective contractor management and regular review and testing.

Ensure that First Aid procedures for the Exercise Science labs, Gym and other Physical Education (PE) teaching areas are implemented according to University policies. This will include inducting students in First Aid procedures.

Provide other general support for the teaching and related research activities as required.

Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.
Key Position Capabilities
-
Tertiary qualifications in the area of Sports Management, Exercise Physiology or equivalent combination of training and experience in sport and exercise facility and equipment management roles.

Significant and proven management skills in the provision of laboratory, gymnasium and technical services in a customer focussed environment including: Extensive expertise in a broad range of technical work such as Exercise Science/Clinical Exercise Physiology, technology platforms, instrumentation, laboratory management and scientific equipment management as applied to supporting teaching and research; and high level expertise in planning and organising the provision of laboratory, and technical services at both a strategic and operational level.

High level interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, including a demonstrated ability to negotiate and communicate effectively with a range of colleagues at both operational and senior level.

Demonstrated contemporary knowledge of WHS policies, practices, relevant IT systems, and associated legislation that supports the delivery of technical services.

Demonstrated high level ability to analyse data, produce quality reports and presentations and review technical agreements and contracts.

Current First Aid Certificate and willingness to provide first aid support if required.

Demonstrated organisational skills incorporating the ability to identify priorities and meet deadlines.

Well-developed written and oral communication skills including demonstrated ability to conduct training to small groups.

Demonstrated ability to manage staff.

Current Drivers licence.
-
Capacity to work outside of usual hours, and on weekends from time to time.

Physically capable of performing a role requiring lifting and movement of equipment and materials.
Prescribed Conditions for Employment
A National Police Certificate which is satisfactory to the University will be required by Flinders University before the successful applicant can commence in this position.
