Who we are
The Department of Oceanography is one of several departments in the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU). The Department of Oceanography is part of an alliance of Ocean Sciences at Texas A&M that spans the Marine Biology and Marine Sciences Departments at TAMU Galveston, GERG, IODP, and Texas SeaGrant. This alliance of Ocean Sciences represents a truly unique concentration of educational and research resources. Our educational and research capacity is greatly enhanced by close ties to the College Departments of Atmospheric Sciences, Geography, and Geology & Geophysics, as well as the Berg Hughes Center, Texas Center for Climate Studies and International Laboratory for High-Resolution Earth System Prediction (iHESP).
What we want
The Technical Assistant I in the Fitzsimmons Group in the Department of Oceanography at Texas A&M University will be responsible for performing a variety of technical duties involved in the operation and maintenance of the laboratory. This will involve maintaining the inventory of trace metal clean supplies used for a wide range of funded projects involving the collection and analysis of trace metal samples in the ocean, as well as data input and assistance with equipment organization and packing for field excursions. This position will involve working in a trace metal clean room, operating mass spectrometers (under supervision), and handling acids. Required Education and Experience:
High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in performing laboratory procedures or assisting in experimental work within the field of specialization.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to follow directions and written protocols.
Preferred Experience:
Experience working in clean room laboratories.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures.
Responsibilities:
Maintaining inventory of clean laboratory supplies – Acid washing bottles, vials, and jars.
Packing/unpacking from research expeditions – Packing items into storage totes; making packing lists; labeling storage totes; organizing items in the lab.
Assisting with analyses (under supervision) – Watching instruments as they run; taking notes during experiments; data entry; gathering materials for analyses. Performs other duties as assigned.
