Manchester Metropolitan University (lead partner) and the universities of Lancaster, Manchester and Salford have received an ERDF award of £3M (total project value circa £6M with match) to establish the Greater Manchester AI Foundry. The three-year project will promote innovation and business growth using AI among Greater Manchester SMEs. This exciting project brings the world leading AI research in the universities to create new products and services for small businesses.
The role is based in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, which is one of the largest research-led science and technology educators in the UK, offering high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across specialist departments. The Faculty has outstanding, world-class research in Musculoskeletal science, Microbiology, Advanced Materials and Surface Engineering, Vascular Science, Computational Intelligence and Big Data, Conservation Biology and Complex Systems.
Role
You will be within a small technical team working with leading AI researchers within the university’s Centre for Advanced Computational Science to develop proof of concept products or services. You will be able to use good software engineering practice to develop software artefacts that feature AI. You will work closely with small businesses to ensure the product or services meets their needs. You will also produce research articles on the technologies used.
Ideal Candidate
We are seeking applications from highly motivated individuals who are keen to advance their careers in an AI context. You will have some experience of software development (including on a placement year) and programming in an industry context using strong software engineering techniques. AI knowledge is desirable but not essential as you will be within academic team with AI expertise in the University. No two client projects will be the same so the successful candidate must have the flexibility to adapt and quickly adopt new technical skills and approaches. Good communication skills, including writing skills, are essential as is the ability to work with businesses to assess their requirements. You will be creative in supporting business to innovate and develop new products and services through the application of the latest digital technology. The ability to travel to meetings at client company locations throughout the region is essential.

In recognition of staff contributions to the University’s achievements during the 2021/2022 academic year, an additional discretionary payment of 2% per annum will be added to your salary until 31/07/23 in order to ensure consistency amongst existing and incoming staff. This additional 2% will be paid pro rata in equal monthly installments, on top of your salary each month until 31/07/23.
