Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides technical support. Responsibilities may include computer programming or operations; research support; medical patient care; technical equipment maintenance, repair, fabrication or operation; or other technical support functions.

Unit Position Summary

The research technicians will be collaborating with the Aquatic Landscape Ecology Lab at MSU, the Applied Aquatic Ecology Lab at the University of Michigan, and the Institute for Fisheries Research (IFR) of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources during summer 2024.  The technicians will assist in field and laboratory work for studies of imperiled fishes.  They will learn methods for capture and identification of fishes and provide data management support.  They may also assist in other activities such as data entry, habitat surveys, pond draining, and equipment and grounds maintenance.  The technicians will gain experience relevant to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources fisheries technician and biologist positions.  The main work location will be the IFR office on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, but some traveling to field sites will be required throughout the summer.

Desired Qualifications

  • Pursuing or have completed a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife, Biology, Ecology, or field of study related to natural resources management
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative setting
  • Self-starting and highly motivated
  • Experience with data entry and QA/QC
  • Interested in performing fisheries-related field work
  • Experience using ArcGIS or other spatial analysis software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word
